I didn't read the whole article but I think this would do more harm than good to the reputation of an organization, only to get an extra year on the players contract.

I doubt this ever happens in hockey. Not enough benefit in going this route. The player would get an eighth year but it does not allow him to earn more money.

It doesn't change how much he gets per year.

marian gaborik will be 32 when his current contract expires

so a 7 year deal expires at 39 and an 8 year deal at 40

if he gets say $7m per for either a 7 or 8 year deal that 8th year at $7m is likely a bit higher than he can expect to sign for as a ufa at that age

these guys arent going to give up any money to get that extra year that extra year will become an automatic expectation just like the ntc

The team giving the player could potentially receive more that way. Which is a good thing, IMHO.

I read the article and didn't think it would add any value until I read your comment. I hadn't considered this but IF he's debating between 7x7 mill from a new team and could get even 7x7mill+5mill that's a pretty nice perk to add on the end of an aging guys contract.

New team gets assured the player (during exclusive negotiation period) and 8 year deal.
Player gets 8 year deal (over 7 years) and still decides where he goes
Old team gets something instead of letting player walk for nothing.

This creates a win, win, win. Just like the last CBA I wouldn't be surprised to see all of these loopholes and options contemplated and attempted at least once or twice as GMs try and get a competetive advantage. In previous offseasons we've seen UFA's contracting rights traded for draft picks (Jay Bo to Calgary awhile back is the one I recall) so I wouldn't be surprised to see a GM try it.
