As you can probably see from my team, I'm hurting for PIMs. It's a shallow league, so there are lots of PIMs available on the wire. Having said that, would you consider trading Wheeler for Ott? That would allow me to save next week's claim to improve my D. I'm trying to decide if I will miss Wheeler given his slow start (I used Dobber's guide, and he had him listed quite highly).

Is this a daily or weekly set league?
If you need PIM, I'd simply roster a single goon. In a five-category league, I think this is something you need to consider. Here's an example of two ways to build a team of 6F: 80pt forward, 20 PIM 80pt forward, 20 PIM 70pt forward, 20 PIM 70pt forward, 20 PIM 60pt forward, 20 PIM 10pt forward, 300 PIM [GOON] TOTALS: 370pts, 400 PIM Other teams might draft their PIM built-in, at the expense of points. 70pt forward, 60 PIM 70pt forward, 60 PIM 60pt forward, 60 PIM 60pt forward, 60 PIM 50pt forward, 80 PIM 50pt forward, 80 PIM TOTAL: 360pts, 400 PIM Here... I think you have to bite the bullet and add a GOON. (because it is ROTO and you need to compete) ADD: Zenon Konopka DROP: Blake Wheeler Once you get in a better position in PIM, you can consider dropping Konopka to bolster whatever forward cats you need. |

I would listen to Pengwin7 on this one. Pick up a goon and rack up some PIM to keep you in the hunt for that cat. I would consider dropping a Dman for a goon if you dont want to let go of Wheeler just yet.

Carkner might be a good option if you're looking for PIMs from the blueline. He's probably a FA. Hamonic is probably snapped up, but he may be good too.

As an alternative idea, Derek Dorsett gets a regular shift and top-end PIM as well.

I agree with trying to secure a guy like Ott (I think he'll have a career year in BUF), but Wheeler is too steep

Thanks to everyone for the feedback. Sounds like my best bet is to drop someone for a goon. Pretty much all of the goons are available, and I think my weakest players are my defencemen - so that means I would be dropping one of Whitney, Giordano or Wisniewski for a goon. I was originally thinking of doing the Wheeler for Ott trade, and then dropping one of my soft D for someone like Brendan Smith, Travis Hamonic, or Braydon Coburn. But maybe I should just go for all my PIMs in one shot by picking up one of Prust, Neil, Dorsett, Rinaldo or Konopka for one of my D.

And to answer one of the questions, it's weekly roster locking. I just had a look and Carkner is available, so that might make sense - drop a soft D for him and leave my forwards alone.

What day does your roster lock?
What is your week (Monday-Sunday)? I'm currently writing a little daily prediction called "The Daily Goon". I've been tracking goons for a couple seasons and the key to adding a goon is looking at their schedule and forecasting the fights. Some teams are big fighting teams (MIN, CHI, BOS, NYR, NYI, PHI)... other teams don't fight (DET, NAS, ANA, CAR). For example, my favourite GOON this year is Zenon Konopka. Here's his upcoming schedule with Minnesota. Tue (Jan 22nd) vs. Nashville: Odds of fight: 25% (Nashville has McGrattan) Fri (Jan 25th) @ Detroit: Odds of fight: 5% (Detroit has no big fighters) Sun (Jan 27th) @ St.Louis: Odds of fight: 40% (St.Louis has Ryan Reaves!) Tue (Jan 29th) vs. Columbus: Odds of fight: 75% (probably as high as I'd put the odds, Columbus has both Dorsett & Boll) Wed (Jan 30th) vs. Chicago: Odds of fight: 40% (Chicago has Brandon Bollig) Fri (Feb 1st) @ Anaheim: Odds of fight: 10% (Anaheim has no big fighters). Konopka is a guy who can put up 300 PIM in a full NHL season. Carkner is OK... but maybe only 100 PIM in a full NHL season. I think most people decide to go with PIM on defense because they sacrifice less offense... but you do need to consider the "reward" too - in rostering a forward who may fight more. Depending on your schedule - I might suggest Konopka for next week. |
