Default Pick up Kovalev?

League in Signature.

So I am pretty happy with my team so far. My goaltending was a little weak this week because of Howards performance against the Blues. Fortunately do to injury issues Gustavsson seems like he won't be a competition in the near future. Still I am feeling a bit concerned about my goaltending. I picked up Greiss when someone unloaded him a few weeks ago because I had an open roster spot. I just noticed Kovalev was available on waivers. I almost feel like if I can't perfect goaltending, I might as well juice up offense. I put in a waiver claim and am thinking about dropping Greiss. Any opinions on whether this is a good idea or not? Is Greiss even going to get valuable play time with Niemi solidified as the Sharks starter? I know some backups might get a good 10-15 games in this season, but if you count the games where both Howard and Anderson would start, it probably cuts that to about 5-7.

I've been a little lucky in the past with some goalie pickups and them getting more starts. I got Holtby last season off of waivers and he turned into the Caps starter. I also got Giguerre the year before and he has played quite a bit with Varly's injuries and poor performance.

I guess even though I am probably not talking major players here and low risk its nice to get a better perspective.

You beat me to this type of post. My deal is a little different but I'm subscribing to your thread to see what people feel about Kovalev. Does this guy have a Jagr / Whitney type year left in him? Is he worth the limited Waiver pick up?

I anxiously await the traffic here.

Sorry, I have zero faith in Kovalev. He puts up great games like that and then disappears for stretches. You forget he's even on the team at all.

I'd feel better about dropping Giguere personally. At least he's old. Greiss still has time! lol

As someone who currently has Whitney and Selanne, I'm tempted to give him a go, but you can't fight history. Kovalev is notorious for his inconsistency and his bouts of laziness throughout the season.

He may have very well lucked himself into a primo spot with Huberdeau, but I have a gut feeling that he will only continue (ha continue, its only been one game) to produce so long as he is not on my team. The more I wait, the more he'll score, and then after 15 points in 10 games I'll snag him and he'll go 3 for 20.

For you or anybody else, I would say let him fade away into obscurity.
As for me, the combination of available cap space, roster space, boredom, and a shallow free agent pools means he'll be on my team soon enough.

I'm passing on Kovalev in my leagues.
It was one good game against a Carolina defense that is really... quite bad.
Cam Ward had an off-night too.

Carolina outshot Florida 42-25... it's just that Florida had that great 1st period.

Don't touch Kovalev... now that he has 3 points and some media hype, he'll glide his way through the next 10 games. He's not worth the headaches, too inconsistant. I'm sure you have some other decent options available.
