ir spots?

fantrax like most sites waits til the nhl team puts a guy on ir and then they add ir status.
the problem is it seems an nhl team will have a guy injured for weeks and just before he comes back they ad ir and get backpaid the cap space. so esentially by the time some guys get ir on your squad theyre ready to play again.
our league is looking to add a rule whereas we can put a guy on ir if he misses so many games, or is said to be injured by a decent source, or something.
im looking for ideas as to when we should allow guys to be put on ir.
what do ya think?

Perhaps you can go off of whenever ESPN gives players "out" designation. ESPN is usually pretty good with letting you put guys on IR ASAP. But that might be a pain because then you would have to go on that site all of the time to make sure your player is IR eligible. But I don't think saying "you can IR a player after he's missed x games" is a good idea because each injury is different. What if its just a DTD thing? Then what if its a broken arm? Those guys shouldn't have to wait.

Your league could consider a LTIR.
Discuss with your league and decide a time-period where the player is deemed inactive & untouchable by all teams, including the team that owns him.
Say you set it as 1-month.

You start a thread in your league chat/or Fantrax chat:
Pavel Datsyuk, LTIR (Jan 15-Feb 15).
This means that Pavel Datsyuk is your property. He is currently injured. You could drop him and he would not appear your roster. He is still yours and nobody can claim him.
Also it means that YOU can not add him back to your roster until Feb 15th, at EARLIEST.

You can also create rules that say that people can "claim" Datsyuk after he has returned and played an NHL active game.
If somebody "claims" Datsyuk, then you must put Datsyuk into your line-up within 1 WEEK of the claim... otherwise, the other team gets Datsyuk.

Your league could specify the number of LTIR spots allowed per team.

Lots of options - that is just one.

(f) Replacing Players after NHL Trade Deadline. When a player be-comes unavailable to his NHL club for any reason, and either (1) it is known in advance that he will miss four or more consecutive games or (2) misses four or more consecutive games and such unavailability extends beyond the NHL trade deadline, the team owning the player’s rights may drop him from its roster and replace him, while retaining his rights, by providing the Commissioner with written notice of its intention to retain those rights. An unavailable player whose rights are retained in accordance with this paragraph may not thereafter be picked up by another team, except as specified below. Each team will be permitted to retain the rights to anyunavailable player, up to the maximum number of Injured Reserve players set forth in Section 1 above, for the entire period of unavailability. Such players may be replaced pursuant to paragraph (d) above, whether or not Yahoo publishes the player’s unavailability. In the event the player returns prior to the completion of the PHL playoffs, the team retaining his rights must exercise them by reactivating the player no later than 11:59 p.m. Eastern Time on the day after the player plays in his first NHL game following unavailability, weekends and federal holidays excepted. A team who fails to reactivate such a player loses its rights to him, and the player will automatically become available to the other teams pursuant to paragraph (e) above.

this is what we use post trade deadline since teams no longer put players on ir after the deadline we are discussing extending it to the rest of the season

hmm. some good ideas there.we have sugested something similar to the ltir idea.
anyone else got ideas?
