Default Big Trade Offer

Another GM has made the following offer, team and scoring in sig.

To Me: Crosby
To Him: Kopitar, Nash and my 1st round pick (10th).

The 1st round pick could land him a solid player considering teams can only keep 6 (7 if we decide to keep a rookie). If I make this trade (I think I will), my keepers going into the upcoming/next season would be:

Crosby (c)
Backstrom (util)
Parise (lw)
Ryan (rw)
Karlsson (d)
and one of Luongo, Smith or Yandle....we can keep a goalie or two D-men.
Johansen (rookie)

The price is steep but is this move a no brainer?

Nash probably wouldn't have been a keeper, so you're getting Crosby for Kopitar+1st. I think it's a good deal.

What goalies does the other guy have?
If he's got an improvement on Luongo as his backup, you might offer to throw Yandle to get the goalie added. I'd be nervous going to the draft without a goalie (or a first rounder), but Lu and Smith aren't the best bets IMO.

His back up is Kipper. Yandle wont do much to sway him though. He has Rinne as his goalie and Pieterangelo as his D

I'd do this in a heartbeat. Especially in a keep 6. Kopitar would be the only one worth keeping, and #87 is a step ABOVE Kopitar. I'd rather you send Parise and keep Kopitar. Nash should do well in NYC, but not a player worth keeping in a keep 6 IMO.

I would do this, given that it's a limited keeper. You lose a possible non-keeper in Nash (comparable to Ryan, so not much of a loss if any), so the significant upgrade at centre and the loss of only one draft pick is worth it. You can always build a strong team in the rest of the draft, given that there should be plenty of talent available. Your keepers won't win or lose you the league, your depth will. So, consolidate keeper talent, and draft well.

I would also keep Smith. As long as the Coyotes operate a defensive system, he'll do well, even if the wins drop a bit (pessimistic outlook). Furthermore, he'll likely continue to be a workhorse so his wins numbers (even on a weaker team) should be in the vicinity of those top goalies above him. Also, Coyotes goalies in the past three seasons have had 8, 7 and 8 shutouts respectively, which is a category separates the great from the good in your setup. There's still risk with Luongo and he could remain a Canuck and split starts. And there should be plenty of decent D available to offset a possible minor drop off at D. But with Karlsson you have less of a need to keep another. Keeping a top goalie is key, as most teams will likely keep one.

I agree with horrorfan that you should keep Smith over Luongo.

I'd also see if the other GM would be willing to toss you a pick back as he'll now have 1 extra. Ask for a 3rd rounder, or possibly toss in your 4th or 5th rounder and have him give you back a 2nd rounder... or something like that.

If he goes for it, great. If not; well, you have nothing to lose.

Do you have any other choices for rookies other than Johansen? Maybe the other GM has a better prospect he may have to drop.
