Default Ryan O'Reilly signs 2 yr KHL deal

http://en.rsport.ru/hockey/20121207/634619807.html

Apparently, it has an opt out clause if he gets a better NHL offer.

"Ryan O'Reilly's 2 year KHL contract w/Metallurg has an "oral promise" out option allowing him to leave for the NHL if he gets a better offer"

I'm not sure what kind of rules the KHL has on contract but can you elaborate on what "oral promise" means?

I cannot. I can only quote Dmitry Chesnokov's twitter feed. He is the one who penned that line.

Wow, imagaine if NHL players start using the KHL as a barganing tool to get better contracts (''you want me, pay me more; if not I'm playing in Russia''). I understand that this is not new, but to actually sign a contract and to be able to void it if you get a better offer from a competing league is bogus.

Colorado has been signing guys to amazing deals for their organization, and Ryan O'Reilly's contract talk wasn't anywhere near where he thought it should be.

I think this is great. Adds a whole other dimension to contract talks, although I don't believe this will have any influence on CBA negotiations going forward.

Basically this is a lockout contract. If/when the NHL returns he will be back.

Good, Sherman was cheap and shoulda signed the kid. I hope Subban does the same thing. If the KHL club refuses to release O'Reilly then I don't think it's an issue because O'Reilly can simply break the transfer agreement and join his NHL club anyways, he'll be barred from intl competition but I don't think he'd care. Only concern is how Avs mgmt treats him due to this in the future, no wacky trades please.

If I were an NHLer then I would've done the same thing except I would have signed on in Sep 15th and with a Swedish club (wouldn't wanna play in the KHL).

One thing which the NHL underestimates about their stupid 5 yr contract max is that star European players around the age of 30 will sign on to long-term contracts with KHL clubs as that league expands especially with the rumours to Sweden/Finland and more clubs can afford to give those contracts in the KHL. Not too many players will be in a situation to sign them of course but you know that some will and they'll be top 6 players so it'll further degrade the NHL product.
