Very interesting read for sure:
It confirms that the KHL is no threat to the NHL, and that players threatening to stay there shouldn't worry NHL owners one bit. The CHL, AHL, and NCAA Division One have better infrastructure and revenue flow. Half a million young Canadians playing hockey versus just 86,000 young Russians. Makes the Russian accomplishments at the world juniors over the past five years even more impressive. Hosting the 2014 Olympics is huge for hockey there. A Russian gold medal could re-invigorate the KHL, and produce huge momentum. I doubt the NHL is worried, but there could be some vested interest from NHL owners to keep NHLers away from the next Olympics. (I doubt this happens though, besides, Ovi would lose his sh*&) A league can only be as good as its economy. And the Russian economy is in shambles compared to North America. Awesome article, very insightful. Cheers.
