Default eric staal vs. nyquist/huberdeau

Which side would you rather have?

I can get Eric Staal for my Gustav Nyquist and Jonathan Huberdeau

Staal will produce on average 75-85 pts likely for at least the next 3-5 years.

Promising rookies still take on average 2-3 seasons to start producing at that level unless a Crosby/Ovechkin.

I would keep Staal as he is proven.

I do get where you're trying to come from... but the thing is Staal is a over-rated...

75-85 is a pretty high number, and from my research, generally speaking are only players that have tons of minutes overall and PP, plus don't face a lot of competition from the rest of the team.

I don't know with J. Staal, Semin, Skinner, Ruutu, Jokinen, Tlusty, LaRose there that Eric will be a 80+ pointer given the depth...

With that said, you're really only giving up prospects. With Nyquist and Huberdeau both are "unknown" quantities, and you have a "known" quantity in Staal. And the general development time of rookies before they hit quality fantasy value. Staal is the better immediate option if you're looking to win now...

A bird in hand is better than 2 in the bush.

Yah I was going to out him down for 70 Pt (he's had that 3 times) but figure he will have better linemates this year no matter what.

Last year in my limited keeper I had both Staal and Getzlaf drafted in 3rd and 4th rounds, and it was SO FRUSTRATING. Somehow I won by drafting Quick, Thomas, Benn, and Karlsson in round 8,10,14, 16 and traded Getzlaf for Spezza.

Really depends on your roster needs. Staal is a solid player. Huberdeau could be something special. I probably go with Staal.

It's all about context as rarely is the trade in a vacuum enough to evaluate. Win now/later? Though I'd still probably choose Staal, but I'm lacking in prospect knowledge. He's still young and producing high end numbers. When do you think Huberdeau will get to that level? Why wait when you can get it now? It also depends on your roster, how many keepers etc. A lot of factors, but I'm the type of person to look more in the short-term, especially when getting high end talent in return, regardless on how highly touted the prospect(s) is in question.

Staal, he's about as safe a bet for 70 + points as you can get and I still think he could spike for 80+ in a season somewhere.

If this is your team, than you are definitely keeping staal. No Brainer IMO. You would have to be in a desperately deep league & rebuild mode to take a chance on the other prospects.

Staal should get either some greatly improved linemates in the near future, or his brother playing 2C behind him and taking on some of the heavy lifting, either of which should give Eric a boost this year. I'd do this deal. Huberdeau could definitely be special, but special is among the top 5-10% of forwards in the league. Staal was within the top 6% last year, if you consider the total to be 12 forwards per team=360, which ignores a lot of fringe guys who played short stints, etc. We hear that a prospect is going to be awesome, and we immediately think 90 points, when the truth is, in todays NHL maybe 3-4 guys pass 90 points, and less than 10 pass 80.
