Default To all you Blu Ray owners out there.....

Is it really worth getting a blu ray player?

Rewind.

Older 720p tv took a crap during the Packers game this weekend, so I bought a new 47' LG LCD TV. Getting it friday whoot whoot. It is the 1080p vs my older 720p, so i'm expecting a better picture quality.

What are your thoughts on watching movies via a Blu Ray player on a 1080 HD TV? IS it that much better? Just looked at some prices of players and the DVDs themselves.

Currently using my own projector to play movies on wall. But if the pic on this TV is great, I may think about switching. My buddy has one and I do recall a really crisp picture unlike what I have here.

So do I make the switch?? Any players that you'd recommend? I don't need the internet connectivity. Do I look at getting a PS3 instead as it plays blu rays (yes??). Then I could game too.

Rep for your help.

I have a Samsung Blu Ray player that I am very happy with. It wasn't expensive at all (~$120) and the new ones are very friendly with external hard drives which you can fill with 1080p movies without paying the high price for the DVD.

1) Download uTorrent
2) google the following line: "(insert movie name) yify torrent"

The yify part is a newer thing where 720p and 1080p movies are a fraction of the file size that they used to be. As an example, the Lord Of The Rings movies were each under 4GB. That is as bad as it will get because of the length of those movies. Shorter movies are under 2GB.

yify has their own website....

http://yify-torrents.com/

only problem (if you can call it a problem) with yify is two channel audio vs. 5.1

Yes it's worth it. And not just for the video. The audio is also that much better.

Watch some Pixar movies on Blu ray and you will be blown away.

Then go get Band of Brothers and watch that sh!t straight through. You'll feel like you're getting shot by the Nazis in your living room.

Definitely worth getting a Blu ray player. They're not expensive at all these days, and I wouldn't sweat which one to get, beyond grabbing a decent name brand.

If you want to have a gaming system the PS3 is a good Blu ray player. You'll just need to buy a remote separately.

I think you'll see a huge jump in visual quality, not just in the 720p to 1080p.. but in the quality of the LCD screen itself. I have a 1080p Samsung TV (was $1800 back then) that is 5 years old now, and it doesn't even come close to the sharpness and colours of a modern TV that is half the price.

If you like video games, buy the PS3.

If you will never play games, blu-ray only players are much cheaper.

If you have a 5.1 surround system, you will benefit from the blu-ray track or larger sized MKVs than what ericdaoust is suggesting. The biggest clue to the quality is in the bitrate of the file.

Honestly, as far as blu-ray movies are concerned, the picture quality is only half the story. As Big Ev said, the audio tracks are the other half... although if you don't have a fairly new receiver (needs to decode Dolby TrueHD and DTS Master Audio) and a decent speaker system you may not notice the difference.

The sound system I have can make silent movies sound great. It's not close to the Bose system that my dad has but still solid.

Amen to this!! B.O.B is absolutely intense as it is, but on Blu Ray its 1000 times more intense.

Love Band of Brothers!
