Default Just completed H2H draft

Afternoon gents Just completed my 1st 10 team H2H keeper draft. Thought it would be fun to post my results. It was hosted my Maya Has The Knife and hopefully he'll post his team.

Stats include: G A PTS PPP SOG +- HITS BLKS FOW - WINS SV% GAA SVS
Weekly starts - 4C 4RW 4LW 6D 2G

I used Pengwin's great spreadsheet from the dobber entry pools. Listing the average draft position for the top 100 players in brackets. Not exactly the same cats though as I'm sure PIM was in there

Rd 1 Ovechkin - 7th overall (4.5) wanted Tavares, but he went just before me. still happy.
Rd 2 Perry-14th overall (10.8) like this pick. Should have gone D.Sedin, but RW is shallow
Rd 3 H. Sedin - 27th overall (28.5) this was auto picked as I was doing research - doh!
Rd 4 Nash - 34th overall (32.3) happy with this pick here. Nice hits and SOG
Rd 5 Weber - 47th overall (42) Wanted one franchise multi cat d
Rd 6 Zetterberg - 52nd overall (61) Picked a little early, but needed FOW from the wing
Rd 6 Kessel -54th overall (38) Traded my 1st rd rookie draft pick. Ended up being Granlund
Rd 7 Kesler - 67th overall (?) Centers were going fast, but should have picked Thornton
Rd 8 Edler - 74th overall (72.8) My 2nd d anchor
Rd 9 Phaneuf -87th overall (64.8) Couldn't resist picking him here.Original going for forward
Rd 10 Wheeler - 94th overall (?) Took a gamble on this one. Heart pick.
Rd 11 Niemi - 107th overall (50.5) Waited out the goalie rush and picked forwards early
Rd 13 Anderson - 127th overall (53.5) Starting goalies were scarce by this point
Rd 14 Briere - 134th overall. Needed face offs from the right side
Rd 15 Plekanec - 147th overall - Needed a good face off man. I bought low here IMO
Rd 16 McDonagh - 154th overall - I like this kid. Good +- and blocks
Rd 17 Michalek - 167th overall - Felt good for a late rd pick
Rd 18 Purcell - 174th overall - See above
Rd 19 - Giordano - 187th overall - good buy low multi cat d
Rd 20 - Brodeur - 194th overall - wanted some goalie insurance

Other picks included - Boychuk, Gagner, Stewart, Cammalleri, Neuvirth, Mezaros

C - H.Sedin, Kesler, Plekanek, Gagner
LW - Ovechkin, Nash, Zetterberg, Michalek, Cammalleri
RW - Perry, Kessel, Wheeler, Purcell, Briere, Stewart
D - Weber, Edler, Phaneuf, Giordano, McDonagh, Mezaros, Boychuk
G - Niemi, Anderson, Brodeur, Neuvirth

Overall I feel good about the squad. A little lacking at center and no elite goalies. I went with Pengwin7's advice of drafting goalies late for H2H. With goalie stats fluctuating from week to week. Happy Sunday boys!

Here's how my draft went.

Rd 1 Rinne - 9th overall - Quick & Lundqvist had already gone, so I gladly took the best remaining G.
Rd 3 Parise - 23rd overall - Not having picks in Rounds 2, 4, or 6, I spent my next 4 picks on the best forwards available.
Rd 3 Kopitar - 29th overall
Rd 5 P. Kane - 43rd overall - Maybe too high, but he was the best RW not taken.
Rd 5 E. Staal - 49th overall
Rd 7 Chara - 69th overall - Complete steal this late I felt.
Rd 8 Luongo - 72nd overall - He'll be a solid #1 wherever he ends up.
Rd 9 St. Louis - 89th overall - Couldn't pass on another elite RW this late.
Rd 10 Hiller - 92nd overall - Debated between he and Niemi but went Hiller because I feel he's the better G with higher upside.
Rd 11 Green - 109th overall - Value pick. I expect him to rebound in a big way.
Rd 12 Burrows - 112th overall - Another solid RW with LW eligibility and great peripherals.
Rd 12 Cole - 114th overall - Lots of hits/shots/goals and RW.
Rd 13 Enstrom - 129th overall - Severely underrated going into the season.
Rd 14 Dubinsky - 132nd overall - Needed a C/LW combo.
Rd 15 Kulikov - 149th overall - Love his upside and he has great peripherals.
Rd 16 N. Foligno - 152nd overall - Boosting my hits.
Rd 17 Hanzal - 169th overall - Nice hits/FW combo.
Rd 18 Campbell - 172nd overall - Can't believe the 3rd leading scorer for d-men was still available here. Couldn't pass.
Rd 19 Horton - 189th overall - A risk, but I wanted to solidify my RW.
Rd 20 Lecavalier - 192nd overall - Another great value pick here.
Rd 21 Zajac - 209th overall - Steal!
Rd 22 Orpik - 212th overall - Used these next 3 picks to reinforce hits/blocks.
Rd 23 Beauchemin - 229th overall
Rd 24 Clutterbuck - 232nd overall
Rd 25 Boedker - 249th overall - Best LW option and gets a decent amount of hits.
Rd 26 Mueller - 252nd overall - Home run swing. Can't really lose here.

C - Kopitar, E. Staal, Hanzal, Lecavalier, Zajac
LW - Parise, Burrows (RW), Dubinsky (C), Foligno, Boedker
RW - P. Kane (C), St. Louis, Cole, Horton, Clutterbuck, Mueller (C)
D - Chara, Green, Enstrom, Kulikov, Campbell, Orpik, Beauchemin
G - Rinne, Luongo, Hiller

Not a bad squad stick!

My biggest concern is the goalies, since you waited late for them, but with H2H who knows what can happen... I'm personally a fan of stability and would prefer a solid number one guy that can cement my stats, but to each their own.

One suggestion that I would make is Niemi, Brodeur, Anderson are kinda all over the shop and not great at any certain areas...

Let's say you get a 2W, 2.00 and .933, 75 svs Niemi for 1 week, then you get Anderson 2 W, 3.00 and .900, 87 svs...

So you might end up with a weekly stat-line of 4w, 2.50 GAA .917 SP and 162 svs...
With those numbers you might win the wins column, but you leave yourself with a bit of room to lose GAA and SP and svs... Nothing is really secured.

If you had another high saves/ high starts goalie like Pavelec or maybe Ward you could easily secure the svs and wins stats (basically high starts stats)... then roll the dice with GAA and SP.

Another thing that I might do is maybe sneakily trade Kesler... Latest reports have him delayed and experiencing set backs in his recovery from shoulder and wrist surgeries... With your squad you're in a win now mode, so now might be a great time to dangle him out there to an unsuspecting poolie for a player that's going to help you this year.

Sure, he might help you down the track, but a title in your pocket is better than narrowly missing one and hoping for 2-3 down the track.

Well... you'll know my thoughts already.
With 9/4 category split... I always draft my forwards heavy at the start.

In ROTO, I think it's wise to get some goalies relatively early that are solid.
In H2H, I'm totally a fan of late-drafting goalies. In my own 9/4-cat H2H league, I drafted 6 skaters (Tavares/Nash/Backes/Letang/Benn/Getzlaf) before then drafting 3 straight solid goalies (Niemi/Luongo/Pavelec). Very, very late I padded my BkS/Hits/PIM with defensemen like Kyle Quincey, Josh Gorges, and Mark Stuart.

Stickboy - I'd put your team at top 3 in this league.
Maya - I'd peg your team around 3rd-5th in this league.

In a 10-team league starting 2G, goalies are much more plentiful then in 14 or 16-team leagues, so they'll fall and you'll still get some decent players very late. Last year, the teams that won my H2H leagues had goalies like Mike Smith & Brian Elliott - which is a reflection of the type of goalies the CAN lead a team to a H2H championship. Quick/Rinne - those guys are OK being drafted high in ROTO (full-season), but a top round pick has to be able to repeat his statistics from a previous year. Goalie stats fluctuate and most goalies (not named Henrik) who had incredible years won't repeat it. With the H2H playoff randomness, I definitely stay away from investing in goalies who could put up just one bad week.

Great draft!

I was also in that draft and thought I'd post my team as well. I picked 2nd overall and didn't trade away and of my picks. My strategy was to have 2 top offensive forwards, 1 top defenseman and 2 top goalies after 5 rounds. After that I would just go for the BPA and fill out my Hit and Blk stats in the last few rounds. Here's what I came up with:

2. Stamkos His health made me choose him over Malkin
19. Karlsson First D off the board. Like his assists and PPP
22. Ward Expecting big things from him and the Staal bros
39. Bryzgalov Hoping he can settle into Philly a bit
42. Kovalchuk Huge SOG and good goal totals
59. Gaborik A little worried about health, but happy to get him here
62. Pacioretty Wanted to balance out the age with a young guy, bit of a reach
79. Thornton Needed assists and FOW
82. Sharp Like his solid +/- and 70pt potential
99. Subban Should get better and has more grit than Karlsson
102. Ott Like his C/LW and FOW and Hit totals
119. Moulson Wanted another goal scorer
122. Carle #1 D in Tampa and has solid Hit/Blk
139. Keith Hasn't been the best fantasy guy lately, but I wanted to take a shot
142. Carlson I just like him
159. Roy Wanted another C, reached a bit
162. Jokinen Ditto
179. Ladd Wanted SOG
182. Backstrom I expect the Wild to be much better this year
199. Elliott He had been the highest ranked player on the board for the last 10 rounds
202. Seidenberg30 pts and solid +/-, Hit and Blk
219. Read Needed a RW
222. Crawford Potential 30 wins in the 23rd round seemed like a solid bet
239. Jagr Needed a RW
242. M Stuart Hit/BS
259. Stoll Hit/FOW

Maybe I went a bit crazy with the goalies. I'm probably biased because in my other main league goalies are THE deciding factor. Of course that's a 16 team roto league. Regardless they were the BPAs and I'm now in a decent position to swing some deals. What do you guys think?

I like your team alot and think you're the team to beat. And you are in my division damn you! I need one of your goalies. Trade talks?

I wish I prepared for the draft and found myself scrambling with a minute and 30 sec time clock. I regret picking 2 multi cat d in rd 7 & 8. Also didn't expect guys to draft 3rd & 4th goalies in the middle rds.

Trading Kesler is probably a good idea, but value for him will be tough at the moment. Probably gonna packag a winger & multi cat d-man for another center & Goalie

Great draft!
5th place team? Parise, Kopitar, P. Kane, Staal, St. Louis, Chara, Green, Rinne? Lots of support in the hits/blocks categories. The only thing that might hurt me is if Luongo stays in Vancouver in a 50/50 situation for an extended period of time... and I don't see that happening. I'm definitely a contender!

Jeez... I said 3rd-5th.
I think the other teams listed (bizzl & stickboy) are both stronger than you. There's teams #1 & #2.
I haven't even seen the other 7 teams in this league but I'd bet one or two are going to have rosters that are similar.
So that'll be three of you battling for 3rd-5th.
(For anybody that knows me, I'm brutally honest... I don't sugar-coat anything... and my numerical-analysis is pretty effin good.)

10 team leagues are shallow... which means that any team can just "list their players" and it will look like a good team because we are all used to evaluating 12 or 14-team leagues more commonly.

We can revisit this thread at the end of the year and you can let me know if you finish top two.
If you finish 4th or lower though... you can be sure I'll remind you of this post. (I have a nice little list).
