    Default Hey Dobber

Going to be doing a photoshoot the last week in July in Cambodia to come up with a good image for a near future article in THN. How about comping some gear from your shop that I can hand out to folks when we do this?

Why would you do that? Well, it's your fault we are out there trying to save lives in this particular instance. Ya see, if there is no Dobberhockey, then cdubb and shoeless won't meet in a yahoo league because here is where our commish recruits from and then cdubb and shoeless don't connect in Cambodia and don't get after changing the game for poor diabetics in that region.

Actually the image of some folks bouncing around the jungle in Dobberhockey.com gear kinda gets me giddy.

Okay, I was just having a little fun - the real purpose of my post to simply say how much I appreciate the connections I have made on Dobberhockey over the years - just some fantastically solid humanists beyond what they contribute to our fantasy hockey acumen. There are more than a few from the forums who have contributed in one way or another to the well-being of the poor in Cambodia and I really thank them for that.

Ahh you guys are real princes. To be honest, what I was looking for here is a handful of T-shirts that I might work into a photo that we need for the article, that would give Dobberhockey due recognition. The photo will happen during a field screening for diabetes that we got set up this morning - so if this is to happen, I am going to need to get those T-shirts send pretty quick to Korea so I have them to take over to Cambodia on July 24th. Not much gets shipped directly to Cambodia that actually makes it through, hence the work arounds and carrying boxes of T-shirts to the airport isn't my idea of a good time even though they would be put to good use, they really aren't the greatest need.

Let me share a quote to put the issue regarding diabetes in perspective. "In Cambodia, diabetes is a devastating disease. Expensive clinical care is accessible only to the urban rich, while the poor remain untreated and die." - Dr. Koy Vanny, Cambodian Diabetes Specialists Association.

cdubb and I helped initiate foot care for diabetics in that region to try and preclude unnecessary amputations due to diabetic foot - the initiative is off to a good start with some funding in place and regular free footcare clinics and treatment funds if necessary. But there is so much more needed - it can be as basic as many people making the choice between whether they eat or the buy the medicine they need. This is one place that a contribution will make a big difference regarding survival and one I would recommend supporting.

If there are a few of you who would like to contribute via my paypal account, I will happily facilitate that. $5 pays for medication for a month. My email address is kordolphin at yahoo dot ca - please let me know by separate email if you send some money - I absolutely need to be accountable and transparent for any funds entrusted to me, so I need the information to do that.

Shakedown was kind enough to point out that my paypal moniker might confuse some - it's William Wakeman.

Do you guys have any idea how warm and fuzzy I felt this morning to wake up to some donations in my paypal account? Yeah, well is right up there with beer, buffalo wings and hooter girls.

To a person, each donor so far has said "I know it's not much ....". Well, to the person who will receive your largess, it's much - in fact, huge. Imagine getting medicine for a month that you could not otherwise afford and really needed to be decently healthy and able to contribute better to their family and community. Every $5, $10 or $20 bill may not buy much in our world, but over there it does and that is really all it takes to give someone a chance at a better life.

Love you guys for doing this.

Thanks Shaker - lots of little bits make a lot. Just to benchmark costs over there - a 500cc mug of draft beer is 50 cents. Your contribution will go a long way.

I had the opportunity to visit the Diabetic clinic with Rick and saw what a huge problem diabetes is there (& world-wide). I'll briefly explain why it can be a problem.

Diabetes affects the nerves so people have poor sensation in their feet. For example, normally if you had a pebble in your shoe, you'd notice right away and check it.

In patients with diabetic peripheral neuropathy, they lose that protective sensation, and so develop pressure ulcers. This leads to infections which if untreated go on to gangrene and ultimately lead to an amputation. Patients with amputations (especially in Cambodia) lose their ability to work & support their families.

The diabetic foot clinic is trying to help treat this problem via
    (1) going out into the rural areas to educate Cambodians to be aware of this problem and check their feet regularly, & provide footwear
    (2) when ppl do get diabetic ulcers, using special "Total Contact Casts" that help offload the pressure off the area so it can heal without needing surgery/amputation.

If dobberites can contribute, it will go a long way to really helping ppl in Cambodia who would otherwise struggle for survival.
