    Default Olli Maatta

Just wanted to continue the lost thread on this precocious talent.

Seriously believe the offensive side of his game is underrated.
In two games for the Finns so far he has 2 goals and 2 assists.

Interesting to see how he holds up against the Canadians next.

Don't sleep on this guy. His stock is only trending up for the foreseeable future.

On the Pens' D he'll have every opportunity to succeed on a team that scores a lot of goals. Match made in heaven lol.

I think the train has passed on "sleeping" on this kid. He's pretty much a known commodity by now.

I remember talking to my cousing about Maatta when the Penguins first drafted him. I knew then he would be a steady option at the NHL level someday, but wasn't sold on the total package with the offensive upside he's shown this year. Maatta is really proving to be an all-around stud defenseman, and with his team situation with the Penguins he will have every opportunity to put up points at even strength - potentially long-term on the PP. I still don't see him as a top PP option with Letang signed and Pouliot in the pipeline, but he could carve out a nice role as a PP2 guy with great totals at 5v5.

Yeah, I was definitely sleeping on him earlier this season. I was not expecting him to see so much time with the Pens, nor was I expecting him to do so well. He's really set up to be an amazing fantasy defensemen for many, many years.

Impressive effort by the 19yr old. 3rd in team scoring (3g 2a) and a bronze medal playing with the legend that is Teemu Selanne.

Nice to see him play and play well. Not just along for the experience but actually a valuable contributor.

With the injuries on the back end in Pittsburgh he will be leaned on again upon his return. Interesting to see how he holds up with the gruelling schedule this season has presented.

What ever happens the future is very bright.

High praise from his D partner

“There’s poise, there’s talent and … I don’t see the ceiling. I really don’t. He’s special,” Salo said. “And you know, it’s good for Finnish hockey. It’s good for all of us. We’ve been waiting for someone like him to arrive for a while.”

Great to see the heaps of praise placed on young studs by older countrymen in these tournaments. Really good stuff.

Maatta's path is starting to remind me of Ekman-Larsson's. There were questions about how OEL's all-around game would hamper his offensive production in the NHL. And there was also that Kieth Yandle guy standing in his way. After 11 points in 48GP as a rookie, OEL improved to 32 points in 82GP and now appears to be on his way to becoming a fantasy D staple capable of being a 45-55+ threat. I think Maatta is too good to be held back, even with Letang in the fold. I snagged him early in my Holiday Draft this winter and recommend everyone jump on him if possible.

Points only keeper...I snagged him for B. Ryan and I received a 5th as well. Ryan was a borderline keeper for me but Maata is one for sure. He is my insurance policy for my Letang. And a 5th! I think I did well.

What can a 5th give you? I love Maatta and I own him, but I would deal him ASAP if I could get Ryan back... guess it depends on that pick as well as your league setup.

11 teams...keep 8. A 5th rounder u are looking at a pomminville Kesler hodgson type of player. Personally I think Ryan is a lot of hype..good player but not great. Streaky and inconsistent. He can be replaced in a draft but I think Maata is a find. Points only league offensive dmen are gold.

Well you bring up a valid point: HYPE. A lot of talk is going around about Maatta. The kid is a real solid D-Man. Great all-around game and he plays with alot of confidence, especially at such a young age. That being said, he is no Karlsson in regards to a points-only league. He will get points from his smart positioning and from the fact that the Pens are just a scoring threat on every shift (assists here and there), but he is not a coast-to-coast D with a blistering shot that is solely focused on scoring.

I see him as a 45 point D at best, whereas I feel Ryan can be a 40-30 player on a consistent basis. It really depends on how your league values those types of players.

If you can get a Pomminville or Hodgson player as well, then I feel the return is warranted for Ryan. If it's just Maatta and a filler, then I would stand pat with Ryan.
