Just throwing out a guess that Subban signs for 4 years @ 8.5m/year.

    What's your guess?

I'll throw a quick wrench into this:

Does PK receive an offer sheet before Bergevin even offers an acceptable offer? Or does he just do whatever it takes to sign PK before he hits the open market?

PK won't get an offer sheet because MTL will match. I see an offer going in at 8.5, 8 years. Done. What team would offer MORE than that and if they did, offering something like this pretty well sends the message that they'll match anything. Barring a trade, this guy's a Hab for life. I hope MTL doesn't make the same mistake they did with Chelios.

An eight year deal takes him to 33 years old, and would stand as his only big contract.........I think he'll sign for shorter term, in the 8-9 range........then test free agency.

Agreed, but it can't all be money, can it? Also, defencemen preserve value well into their 30s so even at 33, I bet he gets a whopper of an offer anyway. The guy's gonna make dough either way. I don't see him wanting to test UFA for fun. If he likes playing in MTL as much as he does, the option of UFA makes little sense since MTL would essentially try to match any open market offer he would get and it would be up to him to pick to stay. He'd be basically leaving MTL for reasons other than money if he wanted to be UFA. MTL will give him all the dollars the market says he should get. Here's to hoping he takes a hometown discount a la Crosby, though.

Seriously, what can't you do with 60M that you can with 68? Plus, these guys make so much in endorsement deals anyway, base salary starts to be dwarfed. Eventually, if money is less of an object, it becomes about quality of life, quality of team and chance to win, essentially. Grass isn't always greener (and yes that could be a pun lol).

7 years/58.8 million offer sheet. Basically whatever the number is right below the four first rounder compensation.

Subban owners in cap leagues are probably as jumpy as a long tailed cat in a room full of rocking chairs right now...

My guess is 6 yrs, 8.75.
An offer sheet would be fun but I put the odds of it happening somewhere near zero (as in just below zero).

Yeah, I'm going off the 2012 RFA compensation where the line was $8.410977 million, which is the latest I could find. It's possibly higher. But I'm basically giving him the Weber deal only at half the length because no team can cheat and backload their deals anymore.

The beauty of the seven-year contract is it allows him to hit free agency again at 32 where he can hit another seven-(or eight)-year deal at millions more.

With inflation and an escalating cap ceiling, it'll be billions.

    For the fun of it:
Colorado has 25.935M in cap space (CapGeek). They need 2 or 3 more forwards, 2 more D, maybe 3 if they want Elliot back.

    -Offer PK 8 years/80M
    -Re-sign O'Reilly @ 6M/5yr
    -Re-sign McGinn @ 2.5M/2yr
    -Re-sign Barrie on a bridge contract @ 2M/2yr
-Sign UFA Brendan Morrow @ 1.5/yr
-Re-sign Stef Elliot for 1.5M/2 yr?

That leaves you 2.435M under the cap. Parenteau and Tanguay (combined 7.5M) both expire the same summer as MacKinnon so about 4M out of 7.5M goes towards re-signing him? Macks cap hit is currently 3.775M.

This would give you a core of MacKinnon, Landeskog, Duchene, O'Reilly, Subban, Varlamov until at least 2019-2020.

At that point, do you really care about giving up the next 4 years of 1st round picks?!?!

    2014-2015 lines:
    Landeskog-MacKinnon-Parenteau
    O'Reilly-Duchene-Tanguay
    McGinn-Mitchell-Morrow
    Macleod-Talbot-Cliche
    Bordeleau

    Subban-Johnson
    Hejda-Barrie
    Wilson-Holden
    Guenin
    Elliot

    Varlamov-Berra
