As much as it sucks for the Penguins to give up a top prospect like Morrow for what essentially amounts to a rental they were definitely able to do so because of how much prospect depth they have on defense. Just look at who they have even after dealing Morrow:

Simon Despres, Derrick Pouliot, Olli Maatta, Scott Harrington and Brian Dumoulin. Even if Morrow was the best of the bunch they've still got other guys who will be able to step up.

One thing I am wondering is whether this deal now makes it possible for Dallas to move a defenseman. They've got some depth there now and maybe they change things up. Either Goligoski or Robidas might be deemed expendable and if ever there was an asset that would fetch a good return in this market it's a defenseman signed to a reasonable deal.
Spot on. Looks like Dallas has made their decision.

I wonder who's next? Jagr? Roy? Robidas?

Yeah I was thinking about that. In retrospect the Penguins made out like bandits in that deal even though Hossa wound up being a rental. Simply by re-signing Dupuis they got arguably the better end since Armstrong hasn't amounted to much, Christensen is seemingly only useful in shootouts now and Esposito never got close.

I'd move both Jagr and Roy especially if they can get as strong as a return as they got for Morrow.

Can you imagine Roy on say the Blackhawks? I think Chicago has enough prospect depth to make a similar offer to the Stars as they got for Morrow.

Jagr would provide value to most contenders though obviously wouldn't fetch much of a return so I think they keep him.

Robidas would be the toughest guy to move. He provides too much leadership and still has another season on a reasonable contract. He's probably the guy who will wear the "C" now that Morrow is gone although that will eventually be Benn's letter.

    Hossa, Guerin, Kunitz, Neal...

not saying that Morrow is of the same category, but you can't really be critical of the Pens track record when it comes to these things

Roy is in high demand right now, but Dallas needs him long-term. I guess it depends on the return.

Jagr makes sense, if he wants to go somewhere else. Same with Whitney.

Robidas is almost surely going to be moved, I think.

They had better get a damn good return if they do move Robidas. The list of top-four defensemen available might start and finish with him. I think he could be moved too but I would be asking for SO much if I was Nieuwendyk.

Stanley Cup or bust, for sure. If this team doesn't win the Cup with a Morrow on the team, it was a bad trade. If they do, it wasn't.

Seems like Pens fans don't like the trade while others (outside of this forum, mostly) feel like Dallas lost. Probably because most don't know exactly who Joe Morrow is.

Yeah and people need to be clear about that language. I still think it's worth it to make the trade because it gives you a better shot at the Final so even if they miss the Final and Morrow leaves it's still worth it to try even though it winds up being a loss because you only get so many chances to win it all.

    Jagr > Robi > Roy > Bach/Nils?

I havn't figured if they would hold Jags just for development and seats? He is def looking like he has a cloud hanging over his head saying wtf am i doing.

They have no reason to hold anyone other than that? Firesale time.

For this team, every year is cup or bust. If their moves don't result in a cup, then I see them as poor moves. I know this isn't flawless reasoning, but it makes sense to me.

Good deal for Dallas. Brendan Morrow doesn't help them anymore. Joe Morrow will in the future.

They should feel much better this time as opposed to the last time these two teams made a trade.

i'm pretty the conversation went like this:

    shero: dude, give me morrow

    niewendyk: dudeeeee, give me morrow

shero: dude, i'm not giving you morrow for morrow

niewendyk: dude, ****ing james neal for goligoski

and that is how neiwendyk convinced shero to give up morrow. im sure niewendyk at least milked the pick upgrade by bringing up the neal trade. pens did say morrow wasn't going anywhere...
