Default Ugly jersey numbers (Lecavalier wearing #40 with Flyers)

So it turns out Vinny is wearing #40 with the Flyers. #4 is retired (Barry Ashbee), #14, #24 and #44 are taken (Couturier, Read and Timonen). #40 is a very odd and ugly number for a forward to wear IMO.

That got me thinking - what are some jersey numbers that you dislike on certain players... or just think they look odd? Here are a few others that irk me...

    #74 on John Carlson
    #42 on David Backes
    #76 on P.K. Subban
    #77 on Jeff Carter
    #19 on Justin Schultz
    #41 on Mike Smith
    #73 on Tyler Toffoli
    #88 on Brent Burns

    Start = 13F, 6D, 2G / Keep 44 (3G)

Maybe someone will have better luck than me!
I read an article one time that was exactly about this and it had the top 20 oddest/worst looking numbers on an NHL jersey, ever (pictures included).

Cant seem to locate it though!

You know, it's funny you should say that. I think #64 looks corny on Yakupov yet I think it looks awesome on Granlund in Minnesota. Sometimes it's just the uniform, color scheme or player's personality that doesn't fit. Like Yakupov looked awesome in the Russian #10 but the #64 looks silly on him in that blue and orange.

With Lecavalier, #9 will be available in Philly (last used by Knuble) and that would be perfect for him. He wore #4 to honor Beliveau and #9 could pay tribute to The Rocket. And it would look a lot better than #40. Ick.

And, yeah, Hall and Schultz should switch on Edmonton. It also drove me nuts that Charlie Coyle wore #3 - that is a horrible number for a forward. Even though #63 isn't THAT much better, it's more fitting that #3 for him IMO.

    ^Agree.

The general hockey guide to numbers:
    1, 29-35: Goalies
    2-7: Defensemen
    7-28: Forwards

Everything above 35 is, unofficially, off limits.
Special exceptions: 44 & 55 are acceptable numbers for larger skaters, especially defenseman.

Forwards shall only wear a number over 28 if they:
    a) Are absolutely, guaranteed going to be awesome
    b) Play for the Canadiens where no numbers are available

Good call on Hall/Schultz... absolutely would be a perfect numbers swap.

40 is an ugly number for sure!

I am not a fan of #81 on Kessel. Also #64 on Yak.

Ummmm, the easy winner has got to be Bobrovsky with the number 72 (as a goalie on top of it)!

00, last worn by Martin Biron. I don't like what this number says about the guy's character (says the guy with "0 pts" in his logo).

    From Wikipedia:

Biron, along with Rob Ray and Dominik Hasek, was one of the three Sabres against whom, in three consecutive years, the NHL made a specific rule. After NHL statisticians discovered a bug in their new stat-tracking software, the "Biron rule" restricted jersey numbers to whole numbers between 1 and 99 (later limited to numbers between 1 and 98 after the league-wide retirement of number 99 for Wayne Gretzky). Biron was the only NHL player affected as only he wore "00" at the time. (Goaltender John Davidson also wore 00 during his playing career, without rebuke, at various points in his playing career between 1973 and 1983.) Upon his return to the NHL three seasons later, Biron switched to number 43, a number he has worn ever since.
