Good thing they've been fighting over for that extra $100 or so million for the make whole (which is now off the table).

This is where I agree with Dobber about the players being misled by Fehr. They are fighting a losing battle. Their best deal was the one where the 82-game season would have started in November. It's been downhill since then.

600 million lost now, when the issue is 100 million per season. How does this lockout make any sense?

It's 100 million over the course of the CBA, not per season.

Actually that's not even the issue anymore as they apparently agreed on that last week (though NHL pulled that offer off from the table). Now they're fighting over 5 year contract limit vs. 8 year contract limit and 10 year vs. 7 year CBA. Doesn't make any more sense than fighting for the make whole. Players will get their share no matter what's the contract limit is and NHL should be happy with what PA is offering. And the players should be happy with longer the CBA is.Just sign the damn CBA already, you idiots!

The shorter contracts allow teams to have better control on who gets the big money. You won't get the Briere contracts where he is paid huge money for a long time but is giving average contributions. If his contract expires sooner it perhaps means more money for Giroux, for example.

Oh and Gomez would be a FA right now.

That's the other thing. Sure the players *think* they lost the last lockout but they basically won the last CBA by TKO. So why fight for pride now? It's basically the same system with an increasing cap as revenues grow. Take the money and run!

I agree with that, however, I still believe Bettman and the owners should have done better than assuming such an adversarial position from the get-go. For the sake of their league's image, they would do best going forward to get their shit straight with regard to clear, long term objectives and sound leadership.

I'd say you can easily find clear, long term objective from Bettman's actions since he took over as commissioner. The salary cap was first step. He got it during the second attempt. Driving down the players salaries is another clear long-term objective that basically had to be done gradually. When this CBA is signed, sealed and delivered Bettman has gotten what's he's been after. Then there's no excuses for lockouts anymore.

As for sound leadership? Well I'm no Bettman fan but there's a reason why he's been the commissioner for about 20 years while PA has gone through a lot of leaders and has had lot internal issues with their leadership.

Definitely agree with this. I was stating my view from the players' position. The fact that the owners are pricks should be irrelevant. The players missed the boat. I look at the previous offer and the one they are about to sign... factor in the lost money and hurting the league's potential for growth... that is a net loss for them.
