Next year? Maybe. I mean he's already contended for it once. He's got upside for sure- it just depends on how things fall into place for the Flyers next season. Too early to say that he's got a shot, but I certainly can't rule it out.

    My take on Mason...

Rookie year stood on his head... to bring colombus 33-20-7 .916 2.29
Brings CBJ to playoffs by himself, only playoff birth in franchise history
Jason Williams was 2nd line RW for that team.

Following seasons: Hey this guy has to carry the team every year to make the playoffs? Franchise is a dump and has a losing attitude. Mediocrity is accepted in a non hockey market. Media doesn't chew anybody up. After awhile this guy lost his confidence playing in this dump.
New team, new start. Playing for something again. Why do you think Bobrovsky is succeeding playing for something again because his stats were awful.

Why Mason will never be this flash in the pan or considered in (Carey, Raycroft, Boucher) brancket.

Raycroft 135th overall OHL Stats during 3 years
    4.16 .890
    4.11 .897
    3.43 .918

    One solid year.

    AHL Career after OHL
    3.37 .891
    NHL stint same year
    2.96 .890

Then plays a solid season AHL/NHL
Then rookie of the year, the year after, then disapears

Brian Boucher 22nd overall ... decent junior stats. Reputation to show up in big games. Plays stretches on fire... then is very horrible.

Jim Carey OK university career. Played an OK AHL season and then big rookie year then done.

And now look at masons credentials

Top numbers in the OHL for 3 years and huge in WJC.
Follows up with rookie of the year season. Played 5 consecutive years of fabulous hockey.
5 years of great hockey isnt a flash.. Hes had 1 year and half of bad hockey so far in my books. You have to give him another 2 year window in my books.

Did you look at his OHL stats?
05-06 - 12 games as a backup on London Knights (the starter Adam Dennis was OHL goalie of the year)
06-07 - 62 games, 3.20 GAA (OHL goalie of the year) on a stacked team with Pat Kane, Sam Gagner, Sergei Kostitsyn scoring over 118 pts each.
07-08 - 42 games, 2.49 GAA split between Knights/Rangers, and was hurt in playoffs when Rangers went to Memorial Cup

    You don't count the 3 straight bad NHL seasons (09-10, 10-11, 11-12) when he had GAA over 3 and SV% of 0.901, 0.894, 0.899?

More like he had 2-3 years of good hockey, followed by 3.5 bad years ...

I wouldn't put so much emphasis on major junior success versus recent NHL play, because most/all NHLers did well in juniors to get drafted

Another great outing by Mason - 41 shots, 39 saves, .951 SV% - 1st star of the game.

Rask on the other hand.. not as good.

Let's also keep in mind that Mason played behind several philadelphia defensemen who were playing in the AHL several weeks ago

The thread keeps growing, as does the case for those who say that Mason is back, with a vengeance.

Only playoff birth in franchise history Irrelevant
Jason Williams was 2nd line RW for that team. Scored at a 61-pt pace. Not bad for 2RW. Irrelevant

Top numbers in the OHL for 3 years and huge in WJC. Not sure what website you got his OHL stats from. Won 45 games with a 3.20 GAA on a team with Kane, Kostitsyn and Gagner all over 118 pts in 53-59 games in the only year he played more than 42 games. Was solid 07-08.
Follows up with rookie of the year season. Yes

5 years of great hockey isnt a flash.. 3.05, 3.03, 3.39, 2.95 GAAs are considered "Great" years?

I don't see the big deal about reviving Steve Mason threads. It's not like anyone's forcing you to read them.

    I've said it before...
    I'll say it again...
    I'll say it now...

Goaltender performance is very mental and has a lot to do with the pressure of "expectations". Mason is following in the HUGE "expectation footsteps" of Bryzgalov. Compared to a guy that is paid $6m (or whatever) per year, there will be much more limited expectation on Mason. He is thriving now because there is very little expectations [COMPARATIVELY!... TO BRYZ] and it is possible (possible!) that he does well next year with little expectations.

Most every goalie that makes it to the NHL can succeed if they are put in the right environment.
    Steve Mason is no different.
People point to his terrible performance in Columbus... but don't forget... that's just ONE environment.

A man could be terrible at sex with the same partner for 5 years...
Give him a new partner... maybe he thinks he's the most interesting man in the world. Just sayin.

Steve Mason's got a new partner.

    Here's how I see Mason:

He obviously has the raw physical makeup to be a quality NHL goaltender.

He has suffered from attitude issues, work ethic issues, etc., but has shown improvement. Let's see if that lasts.

He needed a change of scenery and got it. Unfortunately he has moved to the town where goaltending is a decades-long joke, which makes you wonder how good a move this is. That said, if Philly has their defence healthy next year, they have the makeup to be a solid team.

I think if you are in a dynasty league with a roster spot to spare, and he won't cost you much, if anything, he's a solid gamble. He may manage to be an average NHL starter for a few years, which would make him a useful asset in a lot of leagues, and a useful insurance policy in others.
