    Default Canadian licence plates

Anyone know why some cars have licence plates with "Canada" on them instead of the province? They also have about five digits on them instead of the normal seven or eight. I pass one every once in a while, and can never figure why they don't have a provincial plate.

They are government, usually Army vehicles.

Edit: they are possibly restricted to army vehicles but I'm not 100% sure.

It wasn't an army car (unless it was disguised as a civilian car). I'm in Ottawa, so government makes sense. I know they are not diplomatic plates because those are usually red.

Vehicles owned by the Canadian Forces may circulate on the streets and have white licence plates with a maple leaf and "Canada" written on them. Serials are typically five-digit numbers.

It is all federal vehicles. If you go to Banff you'll see all the park ranger vehicles have the Canada plate as well.

In Ottawa could be any number of federal programs.
