One thing is for sure - the Leafs need to make a strong push to sign John Carlson if he hits market. They need to trow the farm at this dude.

In addition, they need to bring in a legit, smart, defensive D who can munch minutes.

They need at least two upgrades on D.
Carlson I'm on board signing. For some reason I'm not high on OEL... not at that price tag. The other D I'm expecting is Ozighanov to sign, supposedly a done deal a year ago. if not Carlson - I think he'll get more $$ elsewhere, I can see the Leafs looking at de Haan or Hickey.

Leaf fans please chime in. I saw little of the series, however Mathews appeared to be a non-factor. Wasn’t more expected of him ? I’m just curious. AM seemed to be a game changer more often than not through the regular season.

He was hurt. He's not playing for Team USA in that tournament that runs when the playoffs run because he's not at 100%, but he said it's nothing huge. Rumours are the injury he has is something a normal human would likely get surgery, but with every bit of medicine available for these athletes he could be able to rehab through it and not need surgery.

But by the sounds of it, we won't know what the injury is. He would have said it when he said he wasn't at 100%

Appreciate the Mathews info. I only saw a little of the series and read the box scores. Cheers

Having said that, elite player or not, he should be listening to the coach even if he doesn't agree with him.
On more than one occasion, I've seen Babcock on the bench talking to the players directly in front of him, trying to get their attention, and AM seems to intentionally ignore him. Body language matters - guys like Connor Brown or Hyman are nodding like they are with the program. Instead, AM just leans forward and appears to be tuning out the entire conversation.

I certainly hope that isn't true. Maybe that's just his way. Maybe he has private conversations with Babs that are terrific and they get along great. Who knows.

I know exactly what you are referring to and I'd say you're probably jumping to conclusions here. You may very well be correct but it's way too ambiguous to really ascertain whether he's tuning out Babs or if he's just really intense and focused on the game. Lots of quiet guys act similar to him on the bench who get along with their coaches just fine (ie: Kopitar, Backstrom, Panarin, etc)

Matthews is a star player who will learn from this experience.. He had a sore back but so did most leafs forwards for trying to carry the leafs defensive corps each game..

How many years has Babcock been coach of this team now??

    1. Who knows if Babcock is even talking to Matthews during that scrum.
    2. We have all been teenagers and we’ve all done the “I’m listening but not looking at you” thing.
    3. Matthews clearly is playing the Babcock game. It’s noticeable.
    4. Messed up back all but 13 games is insane. The 13 games he didn’t have the hurt game he had 16pts too.
    5. Here’s to hoping this isn’t something chronic. He’s naturally a big guy already, and even though he’s not a tall guy, having a wonky back is baddddd. This offseason you can bet all your money Toronto is using all their resources on getting a trainer or Matthews on a training regiment that allows him to get rid of any back issues.

He was linked to the Canucks last week but a Swedish media outlet is reporting the Leafs and Par Lindholm have come to an agreement and a contract will be signed in the near future.

Report: Leafs to sign Swedish C Lindholm

According to Swedish news outlet Hockey Sverige, the Toronto Maple Leafs have agreed to sign Olympian Par Lindholm after a breakout season in the SHL.
The 26-year-old had 18 goals and 47 points - fourth in the SHL - in 49 games with Skelleftea AIK this year. He had one goal in four games with Sweden at the 2018 Olympics.
The 5'11 centre would join defencemen Andreas Borgman and Calle Rosen, who both signed last year, as former SHL standouts on the Maple Leafs roster.
In 196 career SHL contests, Lindholm has 53 goals and 119 points.

I enjoy hearing Burkie's commentary, but is it just me or is the Sportsnet segment way too crowded with 5 guys.

I think they should get rid of Healy... him and Kypreos are pretty much air filler.

Elliott Friedman seems to be the only one that brings information with any substance to the discussion.

    Agreed 100%

My ideal panel would be Maclean, Burkie, Friedman and a recent player, someone who can offer practical insight on the skill game that the NHL is today, unlike Healy/Kypreos who are relics.

I think Thornton or Iggy could be good candidates. Jagr's take would be interesting if not for the language barrier.
