I wish they would give him a Legit 10-15game shot, but it is what it is and he'll get his major shot next season.
Teams probably wouldn't mind throwing $1M to a 25-year-old who has shown promise before - it's very minimal risk when all they could lose is a bit of money. Even if he'd get a bit less money, he could make that tenfold in the future if he's given a real opportunity to play. That is, if he believes in himself. Maybe he doesn't.

I seriously question how good he'll be next season. A total of 18 games last season, and it's looking more the same this season as well. So half a season worth of games over two years - that can't be good for him.

Babs is too focused on jamming a square peg into a round hole... this isn't a team built to play defensive hockey!

They should be going on a deep run this season and challenging for a cup next year, while AM and MM are both still on their ELCs.
Anyone see that happening? Not me.

Yeah, they don't have the right D-men to play defensive style hockey.

He was quoted saying he wanted the for sure money. Plus this extends his RFA yrs now being the type of FA he was. So it's not reeeaalllyyy a 1yr deal but it kinda is. If he gets on a line with Nylander, Matthews, Marner, or someone else that can feed him the puck for his shot, his number for his next contract would jump a ton. Whoever wants to sign Leivo he'd kinda start at square one and build his rep again with the new team.

I think he just wants to play this one safe, and had (this is an assumption) home-town-team-goggles on (i'm assuming he's a leaf fan). I'm agreeing with you though he should have been given a better shot.

Also, loving the square peg/round peg analogies! I said it once about the Tampa coach and it's crazy caught on here.

Anyone else think that goal last night should have been waved off? Look like Anisimov made contact with Freddy's head then put his knee on his back. Freddy was already sprawling out so he likely would have been beat anyway but he couldn't of gotten up to make the save anyway with someone on his back

If the same play happened with the same refs reffing the Hawks game that were reffing the Avs game, then it was a no goal. But since it's different from ref to ref, this system will always be flawed. The biggest variable is who is making the call.

They need 1 person/group making each call. Not the refs.

My fave tweet about all this was someone saying, "Hold on, I've gotten word that there was goaltender interference on that Nylander penalty shot, game not over"

it does feel like the Leafs are on the wrong side of a large number of calls lately.

Or it'll happen in the stanley cup final and then the rule will be forever changed.

    See Edmonton Oilers:

They sign McDavid and Draisaitl to huge contracts... then realize they cannot keep Eberle and trade him.

I think what eyemissgilmour means is that the most the window will ever be open is when Matthews is on his Entry Level Contract.... and that it will be harder to surround him with talent when he is getting paid 11 million a year in comparison to what he is getting paid now...
