Matthews missed today's morning skate, Soshnikov on IR, Kapanen called up

    Chris Johnston@reporterchris

Auston Matthews is absent from the #leafs morning skate in Philadelphia.
Kasperi Kapanen has joined the #leafs in Philadelphia. Nikita Soshnikov to injures reserve with a lower-body injury.

Here's a question running through my mind, a contender from the west phones up Lou in January and says we will give you prospect So-and-So (let's a say a good one, but not elite) plus our 1st round pick next year for JVR. What do you do?

Personally, I think I would try to sweeten it a tad, but how does one not take that return for a guy likely to hit the market in 6 months. I like JVR, he's been a tremendous bargain for this team since the trade for Schenn, but they have to resolve his situation somehow, and I'm not convinced re-signing him is the answer.
They have capable replacements (like the aforementioned Kappy and Leivo) ready to step in.
I take the trade and flip those for someone else. Either move up in the draft, get a guy like Simmonds from Philly (2019UFA, right when matthews gets re-upped, and he's cheap), upgrade on D maybe (closer to the deadline day, if it's still an issue), use the prospect to upgrade at centre.

I'd only take the trade if I was able to flip the thing brought in for something else.

I don't see any changes at C coming... We've got Matthews, Kadri, Bozak (for now) Nylander, Marleau, Moore, Gauthier already. I can see adding a D-specialist winger to increase in-zone coverage. and also a Dman upgrade, I think net and C are two areas the Leafs are feeling pretty good about

Things change between now and Feb, and if JvR is getting traded, but I was also assuming Bozak would be on the block in that scenario.

But ya, they are deep. Personally I think they don't move him (or Bozy or Leo) based on the Leafs are "win now" (without trading future prospects) so I dont think they move him. Like what they get for Bozy, Leo, JvR won't make up for losing them. Nonis said yrs ago "own rentals", as in keep your UFAs thinking they're rentals. They do that, unless something major comes up as in Matthews goes out longterm, or Kadri.

Anyone else missing Bob Cole more after the feed switched over to the Winnipeg game the other night (I believe it was Saturday)? Sweet sweet nostalgia.

He was getting too loose at the end of his Leafs time tho. He'd have the play going for what seemed like 5minutes straiught and he's talking about what he's been eating. It actually happens often on TSN 1050am when he calls the radio

    I am rejoicing. I'm stoked
