Nope... I don't really want JJ.. I'd rather look elsewhere. Paul Martin would come relatively cheap and would be great in the room. Tanev's too expensive, so i'll pass there... I wouldn't rule out last years rumours of Ekholm for JVR either. All that said, I'm expecting a cheap depth move (Gudbranson?) and the Leafs sit on Ozhiganov signing in April after the KHL playoffs. They're not going to move any significant assets unless someone like Tanev, who has 2 years left on his deal is coming back.

Ekholm for JVR id do. Don't like Gudbranson. The Russian is a cheap crap shoot option I guess. Ceiling of being a Zeitzev, floor of being Roesen? I think they need to go bigger though to give the guys they have a chance to win.

ceiling being Hjalmarsson/Larsson, he's not going to give you offense. He's going to make standing anywhere Andersen an extremely unpleasant experience for anyone not in a Leafs sweater.

perhaps I'm under-selling his overall game and have been led to think he's more of a defensive specialist here's a good breakdown of what to expect. His agent has basically told all other NHL teams he's committed to the Leafs for next season:

I guess Toronto is the Moscow of Canada now! Come on over Kaprizov and Gusev!

I've never understood the Ozhiganov hype but I'm guessing it's just because of Toronto. I've never been impressed by him and he's already 25 years old, so I'm not expecting him to get any better. Maybe he surprises and can become a decent bottom-pair D-man at the NHL level but I definitely wouldn't expect anything more than that.

Leafs would have to trade for them as their rights are held by Minn & Vegas. Korshkov is sitting there, drafted by Tor. See what happens with him next year. He's wasn't getting much playing time in Russia with Lokomotiv until this year

I don't think we can rely on these Overseas signings to be viable stop gaps anymore... Need a real big name to fill out the top 4

I mean when they become FA. Both sound as if they don't want to be a part of those teams

Gusev, total agreement, especially after Shipachev... Kaprizov I think just took the money vs ELC he would have signed. I can see him coming over.

I will never understand why Leivo decided to re-sign with the Leafs when he could have become Group VI UFA at the end of this season. They finally decide to scratch Martin but instead of dressing Leivo, they call up Kapanen? It's a toxic situation for him but he willingly decided to stay in Toronto when he could have walked away next summer, so that's on him and his agent. I guess he just wanted the guaranteed $925k and didn't care about actually playing. Is he really going to be at the top of his game next season after barely playing for a year? I doubt that. He turns 25 soon, so this season was very important - and it's pretty much wasted now.

Or he realizes 3 holes will open up (Bozak, Leo, JvR), and Moore/Sosh still not signed come 2018-19 season and wants to be a Leaf (he's from Innisfil Ontario). Plus he's a 25yr old with less than 50 NHL Games experience, the open market could have been bad to him.

I wish they would give him a Legit 10-15game shot, but it is what it is and he'll get his major shot next season.

Trade Nylander + 2nd rnd pick for a stud defenseman plz! So many good young wingers on this team... I'm sure Kapanen, Marner, Brown, Johnnson could step into his spot and feed Matthews the puck. They're probably not all the same caliber player as Nylander, but if one of them can do 3/4 the job he does why not go for it. So much depth on the wings and no great internal options on D. Toronto is soooo lucky the rest of the Atlantic division is basically a dumpster fire, because the slide they've been on lately reminds me of the Leafs from the Kessel Phaneuf era, where they were always in the hunt until Jan/Feb when they would fall off a cliff. Heard a lot of rumors saying maybe Mcdonagh is available or Barrie (probably not). Would you give up Nylander and a pick for one of those guys? I sure would!
