There isn’t much to talk about but I do watch the games still. Funny how I’m ok with their record right now. I was saying for yrs they have to get out of the middle (9-12th). Now they have and I like it.

    Gotta Lose to get Matthews!

Hypothetical question, a lot of what ifs, but somewhat likely to happen.
Leafs get 1st overall, and draft Matthews
Stamkos hits FA, and it’s known throughout the hockey world the Leafs are No1 on his list.
Nylander finishes top 3 in scoring in the AHL, while leading the Marlies to the championship.
Marner and the Knights destroy the Memorial Cup tourney.

Do the Leafs sign Stamkos to a 10mill/yr contract?
Marner, Nylander, and Matthews would all finish their ELC around the same time, RFA roughly all together. Then Rielly would have his big contract around there too. It would turn into a 2015-16TBL all over again.

But if the Leafs get 2nd-4th overall, and draft Puliarjvi, Chychurn, Tkachuck, or Laine, do you think the contracts would be staggered enough where they could still sign Stamkos? Or do Leaf Management say eff it, and sign him and cross the contract bridge when they get to it?

of course they will if given the oppurtunity.

    two major factors:

1 - if a #1C wants to play for your team, you make it happen. nylander, marner at best become what stamkos is, why let the sure thing go and take the risk?

2 - $$$ - the suits aren't going to let the biggest marketing gift walk. homegrown local boy #1C is their wet dream.

as for the matthews situation, lets face it the oilers will likely get him. if stamkos goes to UFA i think it's pretty safe to say he's a leaf, but i'd still draft Matthews if given the oppurtunity. nothing wrong with having two #1Cs, Pittsburgh won a cup like that. Depth will be a problem later on but no reason why you can't trade Matthews later on if necessary. Puljujarvi is my personal choice for this years draft.

Anyways my point is no matter what happens, the team drafting 1st overall picks Matthews. doesnt matter if the leafs get Stamkos, doesn't matter if the oilers still have mcdavid/rnh/draisaitl. #1 is Matthews, and if someone wants Puljujarvi/Chychryn etc, they will trade down. I don't see the leafs trading down, and if the oilers get 1st overall i still see them taking Matthews and then trading RNH in the summer for a Dman.

I should have said, should the Leafs sign Stamkos if they get Matthews? For me it’s hard to answer because on one side, it’s Stamkos and my favourite player would be going to my favourite team. Then on the other, in a few yrs the Leafs will have a TBL issue again. Personally I think it would be really fun seeing Marner and Stamkos together.

again yes. having two #1Cs is a better problem to have than not having a #1C.

Agreed. They better treat the draft and FA independently. Draft the BPA at their spot (fingers crossed for Matthews), continue to clear cap space and then sign your anchor forward Stamkos for 7 years (through is prime) for $10 million. Watch Nylander, Marner and insert name(s) here and watch this team develop from the ground up. Stamkos's contract should have little impact on any of the kids. And should it become a problem in then next 3 - 4 years... worry about it then.

Leafs fall to 3rd overall. Matthews, and Puljujarvi are gone. Who do the Leafs get at 3? Laine, Tkachuk, and Chychrun seem to all be the same level of talent, and it’s just based on what teams prefer. Then there’s Nylander (unite the brothers?). I don’t think Nylander would go 3rd, but do the Leafs trade down at all?

I really like Chychrun and I think for the Leafs the order for them should be Matthews, Puljujarvi, then Chychrun.

The year the Leafs are in last is the year the NHL will have a lottery for top 3.

If the standings remain the same, instead of a 50/50 shot of getting the first overall pick the leafs will have a 25/75 shot at getting Matthews lol

****en Leafs. Gotta laugh at that.

How do they still get fans to go their games after that lineup they threw out there in Edmonton??

Arcobello couldn't even crack the Oilers lineup and he was playing for the Leafs??????? That's sad..

Arcobello is killing it with the Marlies.

Babcock yelling at him to shoot more and he gets two goals today. But yeah, brutal lineup. There will always be demand for Leafs tickets in this city. Always.
