Leivo didn't play as Kadri was good enough to suit up.

He'll have to bide his time.

    Saturday @Boston
    Sunday vs Avs.

Bibeau getting a start one of those two? I’m saying with about 60% certainty yes.

Toronto has tons of work to do in their own zone, but Dubnyk stole 2pts out of Toronto I think. At least stole 1pt from Toronto.

Because Nylander wants to play center. Nylander needs to be engaged all the time to be effective I think. He’s known to drift, and when you’re a center you tend to not do that as often. I think Babcock is just trying to get him to be mentally in a game from start to finish.

Marner started the game on the 4th line, but eventually found his spot on the first line again.

The message? Even though Marner has been one of the best players night in and night out, Babcock still wants to make him earn his time. He was driving play on that 4th line and clearly showed he didn't belong there. He still played 19 minutes and his 2nd most time this year. He has yet to play less than 15.

Babcock did this to Nylander too.

It's his way of telling the young guns that 'your effort is wavering' or whatever. The good thing is their able to keep their cool and get their spot back.

At what point do you say the Leafs are just shooting a lot and not running into hot/good goalies? I’d say they need SO practice, but they were solid chances, especially JvRs, he had Smith fooled. I still was a little surprised Nylander didn’t go in 1 of the 2 SO recently.

I honestly don't even care about the outcome of games yet. I see growth, I see skill, I see positive forward motion in the organization. If that leads to another top 10 pick this year... so be it.

For the first time since the lock out year, they're fun to watch.

Oh ya, so much fun to watch. But these tight games I wish I saw some “finishing” skill.

That OT was so much fun to watch

They need more shut down finishing skill more than one more goal skill. Still some gaping holes on D. I've never been sold on Gardiner in the top 4. Optimally we find a full new second pairing or split Rielly/Zaitsev up and new partners for each.

With such a young group they'll start putting those pieces together and closing out games... I suspect they'll be better at holding leads by 4th quarter this season and have added another top 4D either trade/UFA or in house growth for next season.

I’ve liked Gardiner this yr as a #4, PP#1/2 guy. He has played well to me to warrant such a good contract now.

I’m high on Neilsen in the AHL. He’s got top 4 minimum written all over him. But it depends how the Leafs see their team. Do they think Zaits, Rielly, Gardiner and +1 will make their top 4 of the future?

Completely agree on Nielsen... Dermott as well has top 4 written all over him. I made a post last season where looking at Nielsen's stats comparatively and his size, shot etc. I've wondered if we've got a Shea Weber type Dman in the works. Dermott is more of a Keith type player in his playing style. If either hit 80% of those two, we've struck gold.

Gardiner's been much better this year and better last than the year before. Finally a coach has been able to keep his head somewhat screwed on tight. I don't see those wild cross ice loose puck gambles that led to 2 or 3: 2-1's the other way, per game that we did with Wilson & Carlyle. He's been a good soldier, I just don't see him being in the long term plans for the Leafs. Like Phaneuf, his trade value has increased significantly since Babs arrived.

I think the top 4 in 3-4 years is Rielly, Zaitsev, Dermott, Nielsen... or possibly Greenway as a old school shut down grinder

Very excited to see the lines with Bozak tonight.

Huge whole to fill. Who does it? Nylander slated to start there tonight.

Also, Gautheir recalled and Leivo gets his first start. Corrado a rare sighting tonight too.

Unfortunately, the Corrado sighting was a preemptive mention. Gardiner was sick and couldn't attend practice, so Corrado looked like he was going in, but it was later confirmed Gardiner would indeed play, leaving Corrado out again.

The Matthews/Marner experiment was pretty dull actually. I really wanted that to happen and maybe they just need time to build chemistry, but Marner/JvR clearly have chemistry, and same goes with Nylander/Matthews.

Gauthier played VERY well I thought. Be interesting if he can beat out Craig Smith for that 4th line, PK role. He did seem to have trouble staying on his feet for the first half of the game, and seemed to get gassed quickly. But I still was impressed with him.
