BOOM - new 30 thoughts.
I finally get to link one!
As the forum's most-extreme +/- advocate, this quote was my fave:
Palat's going to win a Selke some day. Plus/minus is a flawed stat, but it is illuminating when you're a plus-32 playing tough competition on a team where only one other guy is above 12 (Johnson)
TB's roster stats.
Yes +/- is flawed in the sense that people continue to cross-compare players on different teams - when a bad team vs. good team definitely has an effect.
Then they use their bad judgment in forming a comparison to call it a bad/useless stat.
If people would just stop doing that... they might, like Friedman, understand how to properly use +/- to remark something of significcane.
Like... the value in noting how high Palat's +/- is relative to his teammates (or how low Ovechkin's is... relative to his).
Thanks, Peng.
New found respect for Ed Jovo!

Haha, touché Peng! I have to admit, I did pause when I saw that on Tampa's roster.
I still disagree until I see how each goal against/for was scored and who may have been primarily responsible. Five guys on the ice, plus a goalie. A mistake by one and all five are punished(-)/rewarded(+) even though the other four were doing their job perfectly. Meh, sorry, this isn't the place for these arguments!

I love reading one that touches on things I've never even considered/thought of, when I play:
16. "I've never seen anyone make the decisions [Vanek] makes," Pacioretty added. "He's basically thinking, 'What do guys think I'm going to do with the puck right now?' and he does the opposite of it." Pacioretty said Vanek is making him re-think how he plays the game. "One thing that really sticks out is he said to never have your stick on the ice in front of the net, because the d-man can tie it up. He's always hanging around with his stick in the air, and instead of putting it on the ice and waiting for a tip, he kind of slaps at it when the puck comes...You get more speed on it."
It's interesting.
1. Defenders totally know everybody's best moves. If you have a bag of tricks, you might benefit by trying the one least expected. Smart.
2. With tipping pucks, we all know we have a great chance to tip something if you put your stick nearest to how it might come... but if you wave at it, you actually cover more area where it might pass.
Made me think of the windshield wipers on a car... the faster they are on, the faster they clean up a droplet of water.
Or... like putting a golfball through the windmill. Slow or fast, the amount of area the windmill blades are covering the circle are the same - but it increases the odds of "cutting" into the ball.
If you could wave a stick infinitely fast through an area where something passes, you'd hit it. (Oh calculus limits... how I do not miss thee...)
Hmmm... that Vanek.
Have to give him some cred.
Nice.
Good to learn about a few young Detroit D-men on the way:
25. As for the next group of prospects, Holland indicated defencemen Mattias Backman and Xavier Ouellet may be NHL-ready. But QMJHL scoring sensation Anthony Mantha appears headed to the AHL, and it would be a surprise if they'd want goalie Petr Mrazek limited to 25 games backing up Jimmy Howard. Can't see Detroit offering Jonas Gustavsson more than a one-year contract, though. Might have to look elsewhere if he wants longer term.
anyone have a good link? Im getting bad gateway errors
