The Flyers only made one move on deadline day, and it was for the Phantoms, ...the Flyers aquired F Tom Sestito, from Columbus for the Phantoms Greg Moore and prospect Michael Chaput

Sestito's a big LW who's shown some, but not alot of offensive ability, ...maybe has a shot as checking line player down the line, but certainly not a blue chipper.

Chaput's a two way center, probably a little more skill, and less size, who would have had a hard time ever breaking into the Flyers thoughts.

Moore's a veteran AHL energy guy who's bounced around down there, ...he almost cracked the Rangers roster out of camp a while back mostly for his hustle during the preseason games, back when he was still in the "propsect" age range.

Holmgren wound up with about two million dollars of unused cap space and was reported kicking the tires about Florida's Marty Reasoner who probably would have been a nice pickup, so it looks like Wellwood or Testwuide will be the calling if the Flyers wind up losing more than two forwards to injury.

Holmgren is now reportedly furiously working the phones trying to contact someone at the league office to find out what GMs are supposed to do when their team's salaries haven't reached the cap limit, ...which has never come up before, and Dean Lombardi won't return his calls.

The Flyers are denying reports out of New York that he keeps offering whoever answers the phone a second round draft pick, and demanding to speak to John Ziegler. (okay, I made that up, but it's been a boring deadline day from a Black and Orange perspective, I was hoping they'ld still grab Foote.)

Some interesting tidbidts posted by Sam Carchidi today:

JVR and Carcill both missed practice today: Carcillo's ill, and JVR with a an "LBI" suffered when he absorbed a check from Nick Boyton during yesterday's practice.

Zherdev was playing alongside Richards and Versteeg at today's practice. Giroux with Carter and Nodl. Briere with Hartnell and Leino. Betts with Powe and Shelley.

Haven't found any info on Betts hand(or Pronger's).

    Flyers practice pp groupings:

1st: Briere with Hartnell and Leino up front, Meszaros and Timonen at point.

2nd: Richards with Giroux and Carter, Pronger and Carle being bumped to the second unit.

With 4 days between games, the Flyers are supposedly putting alot of time in working on the powerplay.

Theyve also signed two undrafted free agents today: Jason Akeson and Tyler Brown both playing in the OHL this season, and reportedly have offers out to a few NCAA players who won't be allowed to sign them till after their season ends.

I've read it elsewhere, but today I think it was Sam Carchidi's article that mentioned that the Flyers are specifically targeting the Collegiate free agents in an attempt at compensating for the dearth of draft picks they've had recently, so this will be interesting to watch play out.

JVR's out tonight with that LBI and the Flyers have recalled Ben Holmstrom from the Phantoms for a body to have around, but he isn't expected to play

JVR's been playing well since his sitdown with Laviolette. Even had his first fight. Nodl figures to get his slot with Versteeg and Richards tonight.

Zherdev figures to remain with Carter and Giroux. Briere, Leino, and Hartnell remain hands off. The fourth line has Powe, but no word on whether Betts is ready to play, ...if so, one of Carcillo or Shelly probably sits.

We'll also get to see if the recent work on the powerplay makes a noticable difference as well.

Frank Seravelli's giving the Flyers kudos for signing Akerson and Brown, says they're both "valuable prospects" and points out that Akerson is leading the OHL in scoring this season.

Today is an official day of mourning following the Rangers 7-0 smoking of the good guys yesterday. (Sometimes evil must temporarily prevail to keep things interesting I guess.)

Laviolette acknowledged that pushing his flu ravaged team through a gruelling conditioning regime during their three day break, maybe wasn't his wisest decision ever, and gave the team the day off today, telling them to come back tomorrow refocused and ready to work.

He said he could tell the team had nothing in the tank physically, and wasn't surprised when the mental lapses added to the fun. Taking pains to absolve Boucher, and Bobrovsky of any blame.

JVR and Leino had particularly tough games, ...both guilty of bad turnovers, and then arguing with the officials while the Rangers and the puck raced the other way.

Carter is expected to play, and Laviolette says the Briere, Leino, Hartnell line will remain intact.

A reporter asked Lavs about resting O'Donnell for a game and getting Boyton some playing time, Lavs responded by saying that Sean's averaging a little more than 13 minutes of ice time, and that he doesn't feel that he or any of the other defensemen are in need of a break, but that he is looking to get Boyton out there eventually.

I mention that because, Laviolette has seemed to do a very good job of utilizing the teams depth and spreading the icetime around not just on the backend but upfront too.

Something that may not do much for them now, but could eventually pay dividends if the Flyers go on a long gruelling playoff march as expected.

Pronger, Timonen, O'Donnell, are all longer of tooth, Pronger and Kimmo both seemed to run out of gas during the finals last season.

Upfront, the time and the load has been balanced nicely as well, Richards in particular should benefit from the decreased regular season load, ...another area where the penalty killing capable Versteeg will help as well.

any idea why Versteeg isn't playing tonight? I know he's been held off the scoreboard since the trade but my impression was that he was otherwise playing pretty well...was he a healthy scratch tonight or what?

Funny thing is, Andreas Nodl who's been playing with Richards and Versteeg; wound up being a healthy scratch.

The Flyers came out of the gate skating hard, and seemed to take the Oilers by surpise.

The Flyers played a dominant first period, and had the Oilers on their heels, but then seemed to be content with their 2-0 lead and came out for the second period content to make the "easy" play, ...pointless dumpins, passive forechecking, cutesy "homerun" pass attempts, and not much hitting, ...the Oilers eventually realized they were still in the game, and kicked it up a notch, ...the Flyers failed to respond, but got away with going to into their shell.

One of the biggest things I see when this team is playing well is that the gap between the forwards and the defensemen is small regardless of which way the puck is moving, ...they support one another; like tonight's first period, ...conversely when they're off, those gaps grow, ....the defensemen look for the long outlet pass without moving up to be in a position to support the attack, the forwards take their time coming back and don't pressure the puck from behind, ...lots of ill timed peeling off for changes, leaving guys on their own etc, ...the second and third periods were full of that tonight. Pronger at one point seemed to purposely, and pointedly ice the puck after Carle headed to the bench for a change while the puck was still deep in the zone and left him with no lateral outlet.

You don't know what the Flu's doing to these guys though stamina wise, so maybe that's not that big of a deal.

Nodl was a scratch, as was Zherdev; Lavs opting to get both Carcillo and Shelley into the game, ...Shelley wasn't a factor and didn't see much ice, ...Carcillo was skating and hitting and had a good first period, bringing lots of energy, and contributing to the onslaught that the Oilers were facing, but seemed to be in "safe mode" along with the rest of the team therafter.

Bobrovsky had a strong game, good to see him rebound. He made three or four really good saves late in the third, ...one on Eberle that looked like it was going to be a goal.

Former Flyer Jim Vandemeer saw alot of time for the Oilers, ...I know he's had success elsewhere since leaving here, ...but he still looks a fringe NHLer to me.

I must be an overly harsh critic of the team's play though because the Flyers website is reporting that Laviolette is giving the team the day off tomorrow, so he must have been reasonably happy with their performance.

We'll get to our first look at Boyton in a Flyer's uniform tonight as Chris Pronger is going to be scratched with the dreaded "UBI".

I don't understand why everyone is so concerned about these relatively rare head injuries, when imho it's these "UBIs" that seem to be running rampant throughout the league.

Tough break for Prongs, first he takes a puck off the hand, and can't grip his stick due to the bruising and swelling, and now this TOTALLY UNRELATED UBI THAT HAS ABSOLUTLEY NOTHING TO DO WITH CATCHING ANOTHER PUCK OFF THE SAME HAND.

Pronger told reporters he could play, but it was the trainer's reccomendation to the coach.

The trainer is expected to make a full recovery.

Boucher gets the start, his record vs. TOR this season: 2-0, 1.50 GAA, .935 SP.

Nodl and Zherdev will be healthy scratches again.

Expect to see Carcillo lined up with Versteeg and Richards tonight.

How important is energy to this team?

Flyers record with Dan Carcillo in the lineup: 30-8-3

I'm kind of amazed that this story has emerged today, but for what it's worth here goes...

After the Flyers sloppy win over the Oilers the other night, it was reported that a visibly pissed off Chris Pronger was still in the process of chewing out another player as the reporters were allowed to enter the dressing room.

Pretty benign, all the reporter's heard was Pronger yelling "Some people never learn".

During his interviews Pronger handled it well, saying he was talking to no one in particular, and was just pissed off about the team having so many turnovers.

In the following day's stories, all of the reporters present took great pains to avoid repeating what was being said, or more particularly, who it was being said to.

Today, for some reason when another reporter asked Flyer's GM Paul Holmgren if the reports of a "lockeroom incident" were true and did the Flyers have a chemistry issue, ...Holmgren either intentionally/inadvertantly gave a response that identified Claude Giroux as the player Pronger was yelling at, and followed it up by saying he thought it was "great" for the team.

The story's starting to pop up all over the place now.

Not sure if Holmgren thought the reporter already new the details, or whether it was some type of "calling out" Giroux attempt on his part.

    Interesting stuff though!

how do you think it is gonna shake out with the Flyers in the offseason FF? The Flyers just keep adding forwards to a team already stacked with depth when they would be much better served signing a talented goalie I think...how is this gonna shake out with the guys they've added in the last few years...Versteeg, Leino, Carcillo...then you've got Nodl and JVR vying for ice time too...who gets kept, who gets dealt?
