    Default Capitals/Panthers Preview - 1/11/11

    Caps/Panthers Preview 1/11/11
    Capitals on the Road: 9-8-1
    Panthers on home ice: 8-8-2
    Last Game: Capitals 3, Panthers 2 (1/8/11)

Mike Green, Alex Ovechkin, and Eric Fehr each had 2 points during the last meeting against the Panthers on Saturday. Saturday was Greens 5th multiple point game of the season. His last multiple point game was November 11th against the Thrashers. Eric Fehr has had 4 multiple points games, 2 of which were in the last 3 games. In the last 6 games Fehr has had 3 multiple pointers. Ovie has 12 multiple point games this season. Ovechkin is currently in second place in the NHL for game winning goals with 5.

The Capitals continue a great PK, not allowing power play goals in 27 consecutive short handed situations. The Capitals haven’t allowed more than one power play goal in the last 29 games, which the longest stretch since the 97-98 season when they went 36 games. The Capitals currently have the 3rd best PK% in the league (85..8%). The Capitals power play kill has been not better than 17th in the last 8 years.

Michael Neuvirth will start tonight in goal for the Capitals. It is his first start since facing the Penguins for his first time on December 23rd. That game resulted in a shootout loss. Neuvrith has a .908 SV% and a 2.62 GAA in his last 4 games played.

Alex Semin will not play tonight after suffering a bruised thigh Saturday night after a knew to leg hit. He will be replaced by Hershey recall Brian Willsie. Willsie has not played for the Capitlas since the 2005-2006 season. He played 82 games for the Caps that season finishing with 41 points and a -19 plus/minus rating. He played for LA and Colorado since then until being resigned by the Capitals as a free agent in July of 2010.
Brian Willsie Stats this year at Hershey: (Ranks 3rd in points at Hershey behind Andrew Gordon, and Kyle Greentree)

Will Mike Knuble get a point tonight? If so, it will be his 500th career point in the NHL! EDIT: This fact was in the NHL game notes for tonights game and is not correct....Knuble got his 500th point Saturday with an assist against the Panthers.

Tom Poti and Boyd Gordon will also be sitting out for the Capitals tonight. Stay tuned for the starting lineup…..usually 15-30 minutes before face off!

Congratulations to Alex Ovechkin and Mike Green for making the all-star lineup! This will be Greens first All-Star game.

Picture I took in Times Square this weekend!

Game recap in a nutshell. (Will be followed by a more in depth recap tomorrow)

Caps PK, usually very good, was horrible. Epically horrible. The Capitals who hadn't given up a goal when short handed in 27 shorthanded situations, gave up 3 tonight.

As I have said the Capitals have been struggling with scoring on power plays and continued that trend tonight. In combination with a crappy PK, the PP needed to be successful tonight if the Capitals wanted to pull of a win.

On top of that, allowing 20 shots in the 1st period is unacceptable!

DeanYoungblood sent me a tweet asking why Perreault had less minutes than usual. Other than he played on the PP but not on the PK, I don't have a good answer for that right now, but I am looking into it.

If you don't want to wait for my recap tomorrow, just check out the power play time for the Caps....that should explain it all!

I wonder if Semin was sitting at home shaking his head at all the penalties? Isn't it ironic, don't you think?!!!!

The PP was atrocious. The Caps have yet to establish any sort of possession or sustained pressure on the PP. On their entry into the zone (on the PP), I see them firing the puck in but NO ONE skates to retrieve it.

Back to the drawing board for the PP. One thing I have noticed, Backstrom has looked extra ordinary this past month offensively. He just isn't creating many scoring chances. The lack of confidence is definitely present.

MP85 - Whenever they play this spark plug and give him good minutes the team follows. BB needs to realize this. MP brings the energy and sense of urgency to the Caps team that it seems to be lacking.

Big game vs Tampa tonight for 1st place in the Division.

Capitals (24-12-7) on the road: 9-8-2
    Lightning (25-13-5) at home: 12-3-2

WAS vs TBL this season: 2-0-1

    Last 10 games. Washington 6-1-3, Tampa 6-3-1

Tonight the Washington Capitals face the Tampa Bay Lightning for their 2nd meeting in 8 days. The victor of tonight's game will take the lead in the Southeastern Conference. Tampa won the last game in Dwayne Rolloson's team debut with a 1-0 shutout after an overtime game winning goal by Martin St.Louis. Dwayne Rolloson became the second goalie to shutout the Capitals 3 times. His shutouts against the Capitals have each come while playing for different teams (Tampa Bay, Minnesota, and Edmonton) (source: Mike Vogel recap on capitals.nhl.com).

Both teams have about the same amount of Goals For, but Washington bests the Lightning in goals against 113-137. Washington and Tampa both have similar PP and PK statistics overall, but Tampa's home statistics are better than Washington's road stats. The Capitals PP is 18.8% overall and 19.6% on the road while Tampa is 21% overall and 26.7% at home. The Capitals PK is 85.7% overall and 86.3% on the road, while Tampa is 84.3% overall and 87.5% at home.

The Capitals PK streak came crashing to an end last night against Florida, giving up goals on 3 of 5 PK situations. The Capitals continue to struggle on the power play, only converting on 10.9% of their opportunities. The Capitals are 16-2-3 when scoring a power-play goal.

Semyon Varlamov was off of the ice this morning and will most likely be the starting goalie for the Capitals tonight. Discounting the loss last night to Florida, the Capitals goaltenders have allowed only 16 goals in the last 10 games. (20 goals in 11 games counting last night against Florida)

Look for John Carlson and Carl Alzner (the "Carlzner" line) to repeat their shutdown of Stamkos and St.Louis. They did a great job last week against the Lightnings top scorers.

    Who's hot?

Well, I don't know if we should call it hot at this point, but Mike Green is warming up nicely with 6 points in the last 7 games. Green leads the team in ice time, and ranks 4th in total ice time in the NHL. Ovechkin has been warming up for the previous 6 games with 6 points, but is getting hot with 3 points in the last 2 games.

Eric Fehr has multiple point games in 3 out of the last 7 games. Marcus Johansson who scored 2 goals last night, his first multiple goal game in the NHL, has 3 points in the last 4 games along with Mike Knuble.

Nicklas Backstrom, who seems to be one the last of the Capitals big guns to come out of the slump (Semin would be the last one), has 4 points in the last 5 games. He looked more relaxed last night than he has in a long time. Perhaps tonight is his night to breaks his 17 game streak without a goal.

Boyd Gordon is a possible for tonight's game. He has missed the last 11 games with a lower body injury (foot infection I think).

Tom Poti, who was a scratch last night against the Panthers, is also expected to play tonight.

Look for a rematch between Matt Hendricks and Steve Downie tonight. They had a few friendly words in penalty box during the last game.

    Injuries:

    Matt Bradley - broken finger
Alex Semin - lower body injury (bruised thigh)

    Other Interesting notes:

Matty P's shooting percentage is 26th overall in the NHL.

I received a FAIL tweet this morning that the Tampa media was asking the Tampa Coaching Staff "how they would shutdown Alex Semin". That is just too funny!

Stating lines will be posted 15-30 minutes prior to puck drop!

    Update: 7:07 p.m.
In order to make room for Boyd Gordon on the active roster the Capitals have reassigned forward Brian Willsie to the Hershey Bears.

Based on warm-up here's what the lineup should look like against the Lightning:

    Forwards
    Ovechkin-Backstrom-Knuble
    Chimera-Johansson-Fehr
    Laich-Perreault-Beagle

I really LAICH the 3rd line. Laich really likes to play with Perreault, and Beagle and Perreault should have good chemistry from playing together in Hershey!

    Default Caps-Lightning reCRAP

    This pretty much covers it:

Yes, that is a turd sandwich!

    Capitals 0
    Lightning 3

Dwayne Roloson stood on his head again getting his 4th career shutout against the Capitals.

Dominic Moore scored the first goal for Tampa, his 8th of the season assisted by Thompson(10) and goalie Roloson (his first assist of the year). The second goal scored in the 2st period was scored by Sean Bergenhiem(8) assisted by Victor Hedman(13) and Steve Downie(14). Simon Gagne scored his fourth goal of the season on a breakaway in the 2nd period. He was assisted by Bergenhiem(10) and Lecavalier(12). Mike Green made an effort to hook Gagne to prevent the breakaway, a penalty I would have been totally fine with, but he was unable to get a stick on him. The third goal was the icing on the cake for the Lightning and the dagger in the hearts and minds of the Capitals.

The Capitals were able to prevent the Lightnings star forwards from scoring, and successfully killed all power play situations, but defeated themselves with an onslought of penalties. The Capitals had 16 minutes of penalties versus the Lightning's 8 minutes. The most embarrassing penalty came with a minute and a half left in the game when the Capitals were called for too many men on the ice.

John Carlson continues to shine, leading the Capitals total ice time with 25:27. He also led in shots on goal (5), and even time on ice (21:41). He had the second most power-play time (3:20), behind his line mate Karl Alzner (4:40) as well as 2 penalty minutes (nice fantasy value). Alzner had the second most time on ice with 24:35. Jeff Shultz was the most common player on the ice for goals against and finished the game -3 in +/-. Backstrom, Hannan, and Johannson had the next best shots on goals stat with 3 a piece.

Semyon Varlamov played well despite letting in 3 goals. He finished the night with a .921 save percentage after stopping 35 of 38 shots. The Lightning out shot the Capitals 38-23.

Matty P finished the night with just over 13 minutes of ice time, almost 5 more minutes than in the previous game against Florida.

    Default Capitals vs CAnucks 1/14/11

Washington Capitals (24-13-5) vs Vancouver Canucks (28-9-6)

    Capitals on home ice: 15-4-5
    Canucks on the road: 13-6-3

Tonights matchup between the Capitals and Canucks is their first since the Canucks defeated the Capitals on 12/8/09. The teams have meet 83 times in the past with Washington having the sligtly better record of 39-34-9-1. The Canucks have not played in DC since lossing to the Capitals in October of 2008. Vancouver enters the phone booth tonight leading the league in points. The Capitals are currently ranked second in the Southeast divivsion. Washington is 5-0-1 against Canadian teams this season.

The Capitals must score on power play opportunities tonight and avoid repeat the mistakes of Wednesday night by not commiting unnecessary penlties. The Capitals are 16-2-3 when scoring a power-play goal. Here is an interesting article that focuses on the Capitals power play and the fact that it is better without Alex Ovechkin. Ovechkin(2) and Brooks Laich (4) have scored 6 of the teams 11 power play goals on the road, but have not scored any on home ice.

It will be up to the Carlzner line (John Carlson and Carl Alzner) to shutdown the Sedin's who have a combined 110 points. The Carlzner line was successfull 2 games in a row with shutting down Tampa's top line, and need to repeat it again tonight. Carlson current leads the team in +/- with +12, and leads all NHL rookies with 87 blocked shots. Carlson led the team in ice time, and shots on Wednesday against Tampa plus added 2 minute penalty as icing on the cake for all of you fantasy owners!

Keep an eye out for Uno Seis (Erich Fehr), who is expected to play on the first line tonight with Alex Ovechkin and Nicklas Backstrom

Perhaps Nicklas Backstrom will snap out of his funk tonight with 3 points to bring him to 300 career points. I am not going to bore you with how I think Backstrom has been playing (especially passing) poorly, but here is an article I found about it!

It will be up to Semyon Varlamov tonight to stop the shots put on net by the Canucks. Varly is 4-1-1 in his last 6 games with a 1.49 GAA and .954 SV%. He is currently 4th in the league in GAA and 5th in SV%. Sweet sixteen? Varly has been named one of the 3 starts of the game 16 times this year.

Mike Green was named player of the month by Sporting Generosity

Here is a funny flow chart that shows what Ovechkin does on the ice.

Coach Boudreau's winning percentage (.678) ranks about all other coaches in the history of the NHL who have caoached at least 250 games.

    Injuries:
    Matt Bradley - broken finger
Alex Semin - day-today with lower body injury
    Tom Poti - day-to-day

Starting lineup will be posted shortly!

Here is the starting lineup as published by Katie Carrera http://voices.washingtonpost.com/capitalsinsider/

Default Capitals vs. Canucks 1/14/11 Recap

    Capitals 2
    Canucks 4

It was another frustrating game for Caps fans. The Capitals failed to maintain pressure in the offensive zone resulting in being outshot by the Canucks 15-8 in the 1st period and 14-8 in the second period. Vancouver was able to produce 1 goal from 2 power play opportunities while Washington was 0 for 3.

Matt Hendricks(5) scored the first goal of the game assisted by Boyd Gordon(4) and John Carlson(14). The Hendricks goal was the first time the Capitals have score the 1st goal in six games. The Hendricks goal was quickly cancelled out with a goal by Alexander Edler(5) assisted by Hansen(9) and Ehroff(18). One positive note, especially after the penalty ridden game against Tampa was the lack of any penalties in the first period.

The second period action was started with a power play goal by Ehroff(7), assisted by Kesler(18) and Edler(22). The goal was the result of a roughing penalty called against Jason Chimera. It only took the Canucks 44 seconds to defeat the Capitals PK attempt. Daniel Sedin(27) scored Vancouvers third goal assisted by Hansen(10) during 4 on 4 play (VAN Edler 2 min tripping at 18:40 and WSH Mike Green 2 min tripping at 18:49). The Capitals were again the victims of lacking attention to detail when they were called for too many men on the ice at 9:15 in the second period. That penalty was served by team captain Alex Ovechkin.

The Capitals finally energized and were able to do a better job keeping the puck in the offensive zone in the third period. The Capitals outshot the Canucks 11-6 and were able to complete the period without commiting any penalties. Vancouver only had one penalty in the third period when Glass was called for slashing at 2:35. The Capitals were unable to convert on the power play. The second goal for the Capitals came at 9:21 in the third periods with a goal by Marcus Johannson(6) assisted by Backstrom(29) and Laich(18). Semyon Varlamov was pulled from the goal for an extra attacker at the end of the third period. The Capitals did a poor job of keep ing the puck and eventually gave up an empty netter to Daniel Sedin, for his 27th goal of the season. The Sedin goal was assisted by Burrows(15) and Bieksa(11). Varly finished the game with 3.04 GAA and.912 SV%. Year to date he sits at 2.19 GAA and .926 SV%.

Alex Ovechkin led the team in ice time with 25:01. He played more than 10 minutes of that time in the third period. Ovie also lead the team in even time (21:13) and power-play time (3:48). Mike Green led the Capitals defense in ice time with 23:15, 21:05 of which was even time, and 2:07. John Carlson, although not leading in ice time still had a very respectable 20:39 including 1:59 of power-play and 1:14 of pk. Scott Hannan and John Erskine tied for the lead in PK time with 1:39 a piece. Backstom, Laich, and Knuble each had 2:21 of power play time.

Backstrom led the Caps in shots on goal with 5, followed by Hendricks who had 4. Ovie, B Gordon, and Johannson each had 3 shots. Karl Alzner finished the game with the best +/- with +2. Beagle, Chimera, Green, Perreault and Schultz all finished -2.

Matty P only had 8:46 in ice time, and I am starting to hear rumblings amoungst the Caps bloggers suggesting it is time to send him back to Hershey. I don't really agree with this and it will be interesting to see what happens. I don't see the Captials being able to send him back as long as the forwards continue to have injuries (ie: Semin, Fehr, Bradley). MP85 did have 1:36 of power play time, the 6th most on the team tieing with Fehr.

The best even strength players according to RMNB were "Brooks Laich (3 scoring chances for, 1 against) and Mike Knuble (4 for, 1 against)"

    Injury Note:
David Steckel will once again be the subject of NHL suspension review (just kidding), after colliding with Eric Fehr in the 3rd period. Fehr left the game and did not return. According to the Washington Post, Eric Fehr is expected to miss 3-4 weeks with a shoulder injury. Andrew Gordon has been recalled from Hershey to fill in for Fehr.

Ted Leonsis quote I just saw on the NHL network while typing this recap: "Our lines seem jumbled. Our power play is unproductive and is manned by our best players. Our power play is contributing to our woes across the board. 8% conversion of late. No productivity from our star players."

I think that really wraps up the Capitals game play in a nutshell and to you Mr.Leonsis, I say "well done Sir!"
