When I keep harping about re-signing Emelin, I do it because he is a RFA at the end of the season and it took everything to bring him over from Russia in the first place. Gauthier should give him security and sign him to a 2-3 year extension. He is clearly a good fit for the NHL and I don't see any issues with him down the road. In fact, he might learn to use his offensive skills more consistently which would make him a scary two-way combo player.

Check out the Habs' season stats on this link. We always like to analyze game-by-game but looking at individual stats with the team-wide context is always both interesting and revealing. For example, Plekanec's minus-20 really sticks out.

So does Bourque's -18 and Gomez' 24ish point pace, ugh.

According to PJ Stock during the game Saturday the top line has accounted for 38% of the Habs' offence this season. The second line is the big underachiever as far as I'm concerned. I really hope getting Gionta back next season can fix that.

Budaj starts tonight. It's good to see the team's commitment to finish in the bottom three, especially now that Toronto is making a run for it as well. If that does not work, splitting the Cole-Desharnais-Pacioretty line should do it.

I don't think starting Budaj is a tanking move. There's no reason to overplay Price when the season is lost and means nothing. It's good experience for a young netminder but there is no reason to burn him out.

I see what you mean, but in my view Budaj was shaky against Edmonton (even if they won) and I was not expecting to see him again so soon. No professional team will tank on purpose, but I think this is as close as the Habs can get to it without sending the wrong message to the team.

Yeah I agree that it's a good idea to look towards next year. Sometimes that includes doing things that will hurt the team short-term. I think it's important to see how reliable Budaj can be over a larger sample of games should Price get hurt at some point. Budaj is signed for next year so the team should get to know what he offers as insurance.

Scott Gomez is out with a concussion from the hit that landed Tyler Myers a three-game suspension.

Default Senators 2, Canadiens 3 (SO)

    Some rapid-fire game notes:

-David Desharnais is not slowed at all by his injury. He looks healthy out there.
-Erik Cole is playing through a bunch of injuries and was hurt again in this one but continues to give full effort all the time.
-Max Pacioretty is a great talent but still needs to work on his game-to-game consistency. Sometimes he gets too cute and tries to make over-complicated plays instead of sticking to his strengths which include shooting and playing around the net.
-Andrei Markov is looking better in terms of his lateral movement.
-PK Subban is playing the best hockey of his career right now. He is dominating at both ends of the ice.
-Rene Bourque has been awful for the most part but had a good game. He and Plekanec contributed a lot of scoring chances.
-Carey Price changed things up in the shootout and was playing far more aggressive than in the past. He poke-checked the first attempt and on the final attempt he intentionally left the right-side open to trick the shooter into thinking he could score in that spot.

Default Canadiens 1, Senators 2 (OT)

    Rapid-fire game notes:
-The top line had an off night, which automatically puts the team at a huge disadvantage
-Josh Gorges was excellent, blocking 10 shots and dishing out six hits.
-Tomas Plekanec had a strong game, especially shorthanded.
    -Chris Campoli is terrible
    -Rene Bourque is terrible
-Can someone explain to me the reason behind having a rookie (Leblanc) up to play less than eight minutes. Couldn't a vet like Brian Willsie play the same role while Leblanc gets appropriate ice time in the minors.
-I want to check Frozenpools to see how many wingers Plekanec has played with this year, but I fear I might crash the server.
-The team was out-shot 33-14 which is pathetic.
-Carey Price was outstanding, and with a decent effort from a few more teammates the team would have probably won the game.

I think it was Brian Wilde that tweeted something like "after this season, it had better be announced that Bourque was playing with a separate shoulder that prevented him from hitting anything". LOL. Seriously though, what a complete waste of size with that guy, could you imagine what a heart and soul guy like Desharnais would do if he was 6 foot 2? He'd be pasting guys all over the place.

And you think, Cammalleri was offering even less to the team.
