It's funny how the owners/GM in baseball, some years back, decided to not go after most FAs 1985-87 . Intent to lower salaries. and the Union went after them.
Owners lost something like 100+mil for 3 year collusion (judge awarded). But many thought FA players lost close to $300m over this time.
What NHL is doing is even more blatantly obvious. I guess the one problem owners can claim is the compensation is more.

Well he's been offered 6x6 by Boston lol. The presumption is he wants 8+

Marc Bergevin has all but ruled out that Alex Galchenyuk will play centre at any point. Says he's seen enough to know it won't work.
I mean, I get it, I've always seen Chucky as a winger too, but man he didn't really even get a shot to be a centre how are we giving up on it already?

He was just outside the top 10 in scoring last year at the time of his injury, while he was playing center. There's no issue with him playing there. He was playing hurt down the stretch. Bergevin is so full of shit.

The other part that bugs me is their free, unused cap space at the moment. Cap space is a great tool, but I feel like it needs to be used. Whilst we could entertain the possibility for Bergevin to maybe have a couple of ways to use this cap space (trading for a potentially expensive player, acquiring a D, eg.), they confirm today that they don't have that kind of offer on the table right now. All points to the this group of players being the final squad that will compete this year, without the arrival of an adequate replacement for Markov.

Was it not for Price, I would be considering them out of contention this year. The offseason losses ended up costing a lot to the team

That's all Therrien's fault. I still maintain he screwed up Galch's development by not letting him play centre. His second year in the league, Galchenyuk took 15 faceoffs. Now people are wondering why Galch can't win a faceoff or play centre. How's the guy going to learn if he doesn't get a chance to?

Also, that was awful on MB to say those things. Way to encourage confidence and support your own player.

Isn't it the coaches job to determine who plays where, not the GMs?

Scrimmage yesterday was a nice amuse-bouche before the appetizers that are the pre-season.

It was only a practice but Jerabek looked pretty good and Hudon was flying.

That's interesting because Grant McCagg tweeted this yesterday:

In the battle for roster spots...early edge to Morrow and Hudon over Jerabek and McCarron. Really early tho. #Habs
    Grant McCagg‏ @grantmccagg
Morrow kept it simple with the passing, Jerabek didn't. Tried to make the long stretch passes and often failed. Streit solid - plays smart.

McCarron wasn't really able to play the his game , it's was in intra-squad scrimmage so he's not really going to crash guys into the boards and play the body, but i'd agree he's on the outside looking in.

Some of Jerabek's passes missed the mark, but it was also the caliber of players receiving it.

    Morrow and Benn were solid.

It was avery sloppy "game" though.

Tonight's preseason game looks so much like a preseason game. Sloppy and the goalies are iffy. Still nice to see some hockey...

Oh, I don't know about that. Galchenyuk looks like he's playing playoff hockey out there. Or at least, he looks pretty much the same as he did during the last playoffs.
