That's a bit of a downer trade but he plummeted so quickly and never recovered. The only way they could have received more was to trade him two summers ago after his half-year in Montreal which would have been way too soon to give up on him. Tough deal.

That's a bit much isn't it? I'm not sure I would sign him for that long.

I think that it what he will be able to get (or close to) from someone so if MTL wants him, they might have to stomach it. Look at what Gonchar has been fetching his last two contracts.

I would settle on one of the two. If he wants three years, he has to take a big decrease. If he wants $6 million, then I'd give him a one-year deal.

Hey Eric. Who do you plan on taking in the prospect mock draft for the Habs?

For me, I'm hoping Nikolay Goldobin drops enough for Montreal to take him. I know a lot of teams are worried about the Russian factor, but when you're picking late, and you have a team like Montreal, you need to take a chance on an offensive prospect. He's ranked #28 on the ISS list, and 24th on the NHL's draft rankings, so there's a shot.

The Habs will retire Guy Lapointe's number next season.

Although #5 is already retired for Geoffrion, but now they will share in the honour.

Honestly, I don't know. I have some research to do.

I ended up going with Adrian Kempe.

I'm not familiar with him. Does he have a big upside?

I based it on some scouting reports and some ranking lists. I also used mynhldraft.com for help as they merge the rankings of many different publications into a consensus list:

Good size, speed and net presence. Not sure about upside but it's tough to find guys with that in the 20s of most drafts. Maybe a poor man's Max Pac?

Markov signs 3 yrs, cap hit is $5.75M. It was the cost of doing business.
