Great news!! His work with Niemi and Crawford was outstanding, and Price is the same kind of goalie, but he is head and shoulders above those two in term of talent. Even Fucale has the same style (rely more on positioning than athleticism).

I do like the familiarity of Bergevin being around Waite in Chicago.

While not my first choice, on a one-year deal the risk is pretty low as long as the cap hit is reasonable.

He could be quite serviceable. Playing on a third line and sporadically moving on up to replace injured/underperforming players in the top 6.

As much as we love Gallagher, Galchenyuk, there are bound to be some growing pains / dry spell along the way.

There was room for Ryder; there's room for Briere.

Looks like a done deal now... It will become official tomorrow. What do you think? Another move in the works?

The Briere deal has disaster potential. If he's not scoring he's useless. They better be right on this one.

    Disaster, albatross... Hyperbole much people?

Again, not my first choice and I would have preferred a 1 year deal. But I don't see a 2 year term as so fraught with peril.

Of course, I don't follow the cap issues as closely as others so maybe I'm missing something about the impact for 2014-15.

No, not a hyperbole. I stand by what I wrote.

No, the Habs are ok capwise... And you're right, it's not a Gome like situation for the Habs. But their main weakness was that they were easy to play against, and that they could use a couple of bigger bodys. This is not something that was adresses with this move. However:

    - the Habs are not serious contenders for the next two seasons. They simply got an asset that will be useful for two seasons, and that will help the youngsters.

-I will wait for the beginning of training camp to assess this move, since my evaluation of it could be completely different if other moves are made.

Agree to disagree. That said, I'm seeing speculation that this is preparation for a trade involving Plekanec.

I sure hope that's wrong. I assumed they were getting Briere to play RW. Not to centre a line in replacement of Plekanec.

There, we agree totally. If they trade Plekanec with the intention to replace him with Briere at center, then I'll be pissed. I had no problem with trading Plekanec if Lecavalier was going to replace him.

At the same time, as I stated earlier, since the Habs are not a contender for the next two seasons, if they can get a piece of the future core for Plekanec, especially if it's a dman, than it could be worth it. But if they do so with the intention of replacing him with Briere, the next two seasons will be tougher for the Habs.

    Reasons to be concerned:
    -He is turning 36 soon
-His production has dropped two straight years
    -He is undersized
-He is pretty one-dimensional, more of a PP specialist at this point

It might work out well but it could be disaster if he doesn't show up ready to be productive.

I get all that. My only point is, if it doesn't work out it's still just a 2 year term. Might turn out to be not such a great move, but not what I'd consider a disaster. That is, unless it spells cap space trouble for 2014-15. Again, I don't follow this stuff close enough so that's why I was asking.

I didn't mean team-wide disaster. I just meant that it could turn out to be a very bad signing.
