    Unhappy

Only two periods in the season, I'm already starting to wish they'd bring the lockout back.

Don't worry, Gionta just scored. Now I'm starting to think we could go all the way this year. Habs fan!

Default Maple Leafs 2, Canadiens 1

The theme of the game: Life is so easy. Not for the Habs, but for the Leafs. I saw some good and a ton of mediocrity. The Habs did not push themselves beyond bare minimum.

Player of the game: Brandon Prust. He was great in his first game and was easily the most effective skater.

Goaltending: Excellent. There were concerns about Carey Price going in but he kept the team in the game with several great saves. His rebound control was off a bit but his effort and focus were just fine.

The same problems that plagued the team were present again tonight. Most people failed to show up and since the top line did nothing the team barely created any offence. They barely tried to attack the net. The D wasn't terrible but they added nothing in the transition game to put the forwards in an advantageous position.

Alex Galchenyuk had a decent game. The line as a whole with Plekanec and Gionta did not do much even though Gionta scored the lone goal. Galchenyuk had a couple nice chances but fell victim to forward depth as he found himself on Lars Eller's line for the third period.

The goat of the game was Erik Cole. He was slow and brutal.

In terms of entertainment value this game was awful to watch. Very chippy and neither team put on a convincing effort. Some of this will fix itself as players get back in playing shape but unless the Habs play a lot better as a whole it's going to be a long "sprint."

I think life IS easy for the Habs. It's hockey they find hard.

Let's be positive. I like the Markov-Emelin pairing.

Line combinations this morning for the Habs

Max Pacioretty - David Desharnais - Erik Cole

Rene Bourque - Tomas Plekanec - Brian Gionta

Travis Moen - Ryan White - Colby Armstrong (Lars Eller)

Brendan Gallagher - Alex Galchenyuk - Brandon Prust

The D pairings remained the same.

Interesting... Curious to see if Therrien elects to go with two rookies on the same line. Eller's leash is really short this year.

These combinations have been confirmed this morning, which means that Eller won't be in the line-up tonight, and that Brendan Gallagher will play ion his first NHL game.

I understand what the coach is doing but I don't think you can make any one player the goat for Saturday. Even Gionta who scored the goal was not very good otherwise.

Yeah, it wasn't a good all around effort, except for one or two guys. I'd rather they keep the young guys in the lineup though.

Agreed... Eller wasn't the best player on the ice Saturday, but he wasn't the worse either. Therrien warned Eller in training camp, so maybe this is just a message to clarify the situation. But you need to give another chance to Eller soon, to give him the chance to prove that he got it, and that he can help the team.

The forwards that stood out the most were Prust, Galchenyuk and Bourque.

Even if I think that he pulled the trigger quickly on Eller, I kind of like the combos for tonight. As you said, Prust and Bourque had good games, and they are placed in a situation where they can continue to contribute.

Think it's a better move putting Galy to center on the 4th instead of a wing?

I think that does nothing for Galchenyuk or the team unless he is given reasonable ice time.
