Very good points. Some questions/food for thought. Galys cap hit is 3 + mil with bonuses 1.1 without. In 2014 -15 the players coming off the books need to be replaced/ resigned. A top 6 fwd and a top dman are not cheap.
Can a 3rd player be bought out with a cap hit. If so i can see bourque being bought out due to the long term savings and kaberle being bought out too with 1.5 hit for 2 seasons. (2.75 savings next year). I see bourque as much more replacable and for cheaper. I still think the rumoured 1.5 difference for pk is not a problem for next years cap. Hard to fit in next year yes, not impossible but longer term i think its better for the team.

The problem with those buyouts is that you have to find a replacement for that player in addition to using the saved space elsewhere. If they save 2.75 on Kaberle then they have to use that 2.75 to find his replacement AND fix some of the problems you outlined. I'm not sure how it will work out but I'm thinking it might be more wise to just bite the bullet, fill the holes with cheap scrubs and re-load when the money becomes available.

Not much surprise here but Gomez is on waivers and will be bought out probably tomorrow.

Forward lines and defensive pairings for tonight's intra-squad game (open to the public).

    Pacioretty - Desharnais - Cole
    Galchenyuk - Plekanec - Gionta
    Moen - Eller - Bourque
    Prust - White - Armstrong
    Gallagher - Dumont - Blunden
    Leblanc - Bournival - Holland

    Markov - Emelin
    Kaberle - Gorges
    Diaz - Bouillon
    Weber - Tinordi
    St-Denis - Commodore

Subban's the only real player missing. It's safe to say that Galchenyuk will stick for at least 5 games, Therrienand his staff need to see him in real game situations... After that, I bet he sticks and energizes Plekanec and Gionta.
    Points-only keeper league. 12 teams. Keep any 12 players. Dress 12F - 6D - 2G.

My two biggest concerns were secondary scoring and the D. Galch-Plek-Gionta could be the cure to the secondary scoring issues. The problems on D remain in place and with Subban out it only gets worse.

I would go further, and say that Eller and Bourque on the third line will help in the secondary scoring department as well.

Plekanec is not playing tonight. Don't know how it will affect lines combination for the scrimmage.

I love the projected lines in MTL!

    MaxPac-Desharnais-Cole
    Galchenyuk-Plek-Gionta
    Armstrong-Eller-Bourque
    Prust-White-Moen

IMO, they have scoring, speed and grit on every line. Should be an interesting year. Also, I feel the D (if Subban signs) is at its best in the last 5+ years. Price is only going to get better too.

    Smells like the playoffs already!

Just going out on a limb here but if that 4th line is out at the end of games I can see teams filing a bunch of complaints for goonery.

While the writing was on the wall for Galchenyuk, Gallagher making the team is a surprise, in particular because Therrien stated that it has nothing to do with Plekanec's health. He also stated that it wasn't in the interest of a young player to stay in he stands in the NHL. Does that mean that they will find a place for him on the lineup? I can't see him taking the spot on anyone on the top two lines. Is a spot besides Eller and Bourque a possibility?

Interesting move, to say the least.

Article in La Presse this morning makes it seem like Gorges is unimpressed with Subban. According to him, 95 percent of players end up signing a bridge contract. He also mentioned that he himself had to accept a one year deal before his current long term contract. While he says he understands players want to get the best deal, he says PK does not have a lot of leverage as RFA and it's only normal to pay your dues before cashing in. Also says he's not sure how PK will be received by teammates on his return.

I'm paraphrasing from French translation (talk about things getting lost in translation) but that's a pretty accurate summary of what's inthe paper. Not overly harsh, but I was surprised to see one of the players say more than the usual, neutral BS.

Probably closer to where he was two years ago. Mediocre points but more goal-heavy.

In the words of the great Carey Price: Chill out.
