He's a Swede for all intents and purposes.

They might be growing up in Canada, but they're not Canadian. Huge difference.

Also, going "waaaaaah, he can stay in Detroit with all the crime for all I care... NYAH!" is like a kid sticking his tongue out just out of spite. The definition of butthurt. You can say you're not butthurt all you want, but you are, so...
Alfredsson said Ottawa was going to be his forever home. He lied.

By your definition, Mika Zibanejad is not a Swede. Alfredsson's kids were born and raised in Canada. They go to Canadian schools, have Canadian friends, play in Canadian hockey programs. They are Canadian. They are also Swedish. But they are not even fluent in Swedish. In the future, when they get older, they may choose to consider themselves as only Swedes when they are living there. Personally, my mom's parents immigrated from Italy, she was born and raised in Canada. She is Canadian. I'm honestly disappointed by your opinion here because it makes you come across as someone who thinks being Canadian is disgusting or something, or that Swedes are superior. Not saying you feel that way, it just looks like that given how clear it is to see that his kids are currently Canadian.

Unless you're from Ottawa it's difficult to grasp the entire situation and the way us fans feel about it. This a guy who was cheered and idolized by Ottawans for 17 years. We gave him a home, a team, a chance in the NHL. We respect him and always will. With all due respect, you can't fully understand this ordeal being thousands of km away in Sweden.

    Hahahahaha!

Why is it that North Americans always pull the "you're not from here, you don't understand"? Do you think that fan culture is exclusive to Ottawa? What a joke...

Because you don't? I'm not faulting you for that, you just wouldn't know what the relationship between Alfredsson and the city of Ottawa is like if you didn't live here for the past 17 years. It wasn't just hockey.

I'm not gonna comment on Swedish life or culture or player relationships either since I've never set foot over there.

Interesting discussion guys. Remember, get along.

    "Four Canadian kids.."

Looked up the Canadian citizenship law, here is a snippet....

In general, everyone born in Canada from 1947 or later acquires Canadian citizenship at birth. The only exceptions concern children born to diplomats, where additional requirements apply.

Section 3(2) of the current act states that Canadian citizenship is not granted to a child born in Canada if, at the time of his/her birth, neither of his/her parents was a Canadian citizen or Canadian permanent resident and either parent was a diplomatic or consular officer or other representative or employee of a foreign government in Canada or an employee of such a person.

However, should the immigration status of the parents of such persons change to permanent resident, they may be granted citizenship immediately, or when the parents acquire citizenship through naturalization, at the discretion of Citizenship and Immigration Canada.

So do his children hold Canadian citizenship?? Was his comments more tongue in cheek referring to his kids being quite engrossed in the Canadian way of life, that's all?

Did Daniel and his wife secure permanent citizenship while in Ottawa??

I don't know the answers to these questions. I have to think that Daniel and his wife secured permanent residency while in Ottawa, and his children were born here, so they should in fact hold Canadian citizenship. Have to believe they hold Swedish citizenship too.

Do the kids feel more Canadian or Swedish??? We don't know. Don't you think we'd have to ask them. My gut says that when Alfie settles back in Sweden, his children have a better chance of suiting up for the yellow and blue vs the red and white (that is, if they can..)
Neat discussion for the lazy hazy days of summer.

The Alfredssons were permanent residents. His children are Canadian citizens.

Like the first snippet said, 99% of the time if you are born in Canada you are Canadian.

I second that. Being Canadian means that you don't have to give up any of your cultural heritage, be that Swedish, British, Italian, Chinese, Vietnamese, Pakistanian, Iranian, Indian... etc, etc, etc.

So let me see if I have this all correct.

Alfredsson gives 17 years of his life to this franchise and proves himself an absolute rock and amazing leader on that roster. He suffers through a series of shitty management teams, poor trades, player mismanagement, poor drafting etc and helps bring the team to the point where they finally have some real promise to take a run for the cup in 2 or 3 years. So DESPITE the fact that he'll be retired by that point having never won a cup, he STILL wants to stay and finish his career in Ottawa.

Now enter douchebag billionaire owner who is in a foul mood because he seems to have forgotten the basics of how to make money in business and has his panties in a bind because the city won't bend over backwards to give his ugly ass a casino. Angry at the world over all this he decides to treat his franchise player like a hired 2 bit whore and lowball him on his offer. Veteran players are more than willing to work with the cap in these situations but there's a certain point where it becomes an insult to everything that you've brought to the franchise and the city over the last 17 years. There's such a thing as pride, and there's such a thing as honor. Alfie has both, that sloppy **** Melnyk has neither.

Now enter the douchebag Sens fans (one specimen in particular) who mere months ago were singing the praises of Alfredsson, his intensity, his leadership, his uncompromising passion for the game, importance to his team etc etc etc. How quickly they forget, how quickly they abandon the guy who gave them so many fond hockey memories and scored 426 goals for them! All of a sudden, the moment he dons another jersey he is demonized and scoffed at and his decision to go to an actual contender for one more chance at the cup (since OTT didn't want him) is viewed as betrayal and selfishness. Have you ever heard of anything so ridiculous?

Seriously, you need to give your head a good shake, we should be so lucky as to have a league full of players like Daniel Alfredsson, and you don't turn on a guy just because they go to another team, ESPECIALLY when your dick of an owner and GM are directly responsible for that happening in the first place. Show a little respect for ****'s sake, show a little gratitude. Guy Carbonneau, Patrick Roy, Guy Lafleur, Larry Robinson, Vincent Damphousse, Kirk Muller...these are all Habs I worshipped and admired growing up watching hockey, and they all finished their careers with other teams, that's just the way it works sometimes, but you don't lose respect for them or despise them for it... that's ******ed and selfish and you're no true fan of your team or the game if that's the dimwitted way you view things. **** everything about that.

to be honest I'm not sure outside of these locks:

    Michalek-Spezza-Ryan
    MacArthur-Turris

I honestly don't know who could be that second line RW besides Mark Stone, or Chris Neil, which I'd rather not have happen

and then Zibanejad and Conacher rounding it out with some other RW

I love how you always act like you are going to take the high road, and then proceed to trash the team, the fans (doing all but naming names), the GM, the owner and almost everything else related, hell, I am sure if I look back you trashed alfredsson regularily as well.

I agree with you that Alfredsson deserves way more respect from the fans.....but your post is there for no other reason than to stir up crap....just like 95 percent of your posts.....

1)not trashing the team, on the contrary I think they're doing a great job building a strong and competitive roster...give em a couple years and then watch out
2)not trashing the fans either, just those who seek to demonize Alfie after the fact, that's classless and bullshit. If you're one of those, I'm sorry but I've got zero respect for you as a hockey fan
3)the owner is a piece of shit, I despise him and pretty much everything he represents
4)I've never trashed Alfie, if ever I spoke ill of him it would only be in the context of him laying the hurt on my Habs, I'm sure i've hated him at some point for scoring a big goal or something but that's as far as it goes. I have tons of respect and admiration for him and how he conducts himself on and off the ice
