I'm not worried. The substantial losses quote is just exaggeration.

Anyways, they have a 50 million budget and are icing a great team. I'll take it any day of the week. No use spending to the cap.

Exactly. Spend what you need. I don't see no glaring holes on their roster.

I'm not worried either, but might be in 2015-16 like I mentioned earlier when the new core all become UFA at the same time.

    Maybe they bolt like Alfie?

Status quo for me until that time when I reserve the right to go off the rails.

The only way we become a big spending again team is
    (1) multimedia corporate conglomerate buys the team (any left in Canada?)
    (2) extremely philanthropic billionaire buys the team (and stays rich)
    (3) NHL TV revenue sharing goes through the roof like in the NFL (where annual tv revenue basically pays the roster salaries)

The discrepancy isn't as big as the NBA or MLB, but will get worse as the salary cap goes up.

"It’s not a coincidence that the most successful North American sports league also has the most rational approach to revenue sharing. Some 60% of the NFL’s $11 billion revenue pie is shared, which is why tiny Green Bay, Wisconsin can compete with big bad New York or Chicago. The other two Big Three leagues aren’t quite as egalitarian but have improved their models in recent years: MLB teams share nearly a third of local TV revenue, while NBA teams reportedly approach a 50% total revenue share (give or take a few complex calculations).

"The NHL, meanwhile, has been sharing 4.5% of its $3.3 billion revenue (with not much more on the table in current talks.)
    "
Just wanted to give props for these two posts.

Sens signed RFA forward Dave Dziurzynski to 1 year, 2 way deal worth $640,000.

Good kid who learned a bad lesson last season.

Dang guess I was wrong on both counts!

The Sens have one too many forwards in my opinion, but that is because I think Mark Stone starts on either the 1st on 2nd line RW. Yup, 1st or 2nd. They like him with Spezza a lot - same hockey IQ.

Murray doesn't let his players get in front of the arbitrator, so watch what happens with Condra.

Zack Smith could be trade bait as well as he regressed a bit last season but still plays a game that is intriguing to all teams I would think.

Something has to give I think. Can't see Condra or Smith in the press box on rotation with Kassian game in and game out. Hmmmm....

Sens have re-signed RFA Eric Condra to a two year deal.

    1.2 million followed by 1.3

He is key to the Ottawa PK, well the goalies were last season, but he is the forward who is and will be leaned upon. Great signing.

Really? You think he jumps right in?

Yup, I think when they say he is ready, he jumps right right in. They love him with Spezza.

Big gamble for me to say he is ready now, but it's just my gut.

He's a bit behind in his off season training because he is still feeling the effects of the high ankle sprain he got in the Pittaburgh series. Didn't skate with the group in Development Camp very much.

"I can't spend another 5-6 Million dollars on a player. The revenues aren't there. The team will not be viable."

"On the one hand you have fans screaming, why aren't you spending this? Well guess what? We don't have the money for it."

"I'm not asking for a handout. I'm asking just for a shot. Give me a shot to make money so I can afford to do this."

Melnyk was asked if the the hockey team makes a profit. "Substantial losses."

"There's only 30 teams. People are after these properties. But they're not after losing properties."

"I love the hockey business. I love the city. We want to bring a Stanley Cup here. Hopefully it's something I can do fairly soon."

Melnyk was asked why he stays in the hockey business. Joked "I have no other place to put up a painting."

"We have the youngest team in the NHL. We try to be competitive that way. Everybody likes an underdog & that's what we're going to be"

"We're trying to compensate lack of capital by changing the way we conduct our hockey operations. And that is develop young players."

Melnyk was adamant he won't sell the team or leave Ottawa. "Leave where? Here? No. I just won't spend any more money."

"We want to do things within the stadium itself. We've got too many suites as an example. We'd like to make improvements."

My melodramatic thoughts: Get ready to be a farm system for the NHL. I will reserve final judgement until I see what happens in two years when the Spezza, Ryan, Methot and Anderson contracts expire at the same time making them UFA's and Zibanejad is an RFA. Two years of loyal following as a full season ticket holder and I will be anxiously awaiting these resignings before I renew my seats in 2015-16.
Add Condra to the list of guys with an expiring contract before the 2015-16 season. I'm not talking budget until I see the truth the offseason prior.
