Ottawa got a bargain on him last year via arbitration. They wont get that benefit this year. I wont be surprised if he doesn't get a new deal close somewhere in the $4-5M range.

My guess is that Ottawa trades him after the arbitration or lets him walk as a free agent next year. My guess is Hoffman has an even better season under the new coach, and will command a huge deal next summer.

So excited about the brassard deal. He's a perfect fit for our players and organization. He s a guy who elevates his game when it matters most and is very versatile. Mika is a good player, but I'm not sure he should be at centre. He has tunnel vision and doesn't like to handle the puck. Brassard is going to work well with Ryan. He's going to be very pumped to be in his hometown.

Can't wait for October. This team is going to be good.

Hoffman must see the Reilly Smith deal and be demanding just as much (and rightfully so).
That MacArthur deal is killing them at the moment.

How is the MacArthur deal killing them? It's a non issue.

    4 more years at more than $4.5 million.......wouldn't say that's a non issue. I'd say that's a bad contract

Not if he's playing. He's definitely worth that. The only way it's bad is if he can't play anymore because of concussion.

He’s played like 58.9% of the games for Ottawa. I’d say there’s a likely chance he doesn’t finish that contract out. A 4.5mill/4yrs for a guy who is a 2nd line LW on a thin team, or a good 3rd line LW on a deep team is manageable, but I don’t see him ever regaining his 50pt+ self.

I hope he doesn’t have any issues with concussions and he can play (loved him in Toronto), and I hope it at least clears up and he doesn’t have a tough life. But the things I was reading/hearing from his 2015-16 season, it’s not good sign. He was having some really tough days.

He will definitely get 50 points if he plays 80 games. He is 100% healthy now. 2nd liner on any team.

he was a 50 point UFA forward. He's worth that rate without question. He works hard, plays hard, has character and skill. He's not a bandaid boy for missing one year.

He hit 50pts twice in his career. One time he shot 15.1%, way too high for someone like him to sustain. He’ll be a 150-160max shot/season guy, with even a 13% shooting that’s only 20G.

If he plays 82games, he’ll have an outside chance at hitting 50pts next yr. BUT, I highly doubt he comes close to 82games player (I’m thinking 65). So 65GP, 40pts. 1 slight headshot and he’s out long term. He couldn’t even read for months, couldn’t focus on his wife talking for more than 5minutes, he couldn’t ride a stationary bike, anything that raised his heart rate made him get headaches. It was a major concussion.

The issue is, just like players before him missing a long time with a major concussion, the first yr is full of questions. 1 hit to the head, his career could be done. He was already questioning retirement in November/December 2015.

Most guys with "major concussions" come back fine if they aren't 35+ years old. Sidney Crosby was a "concern" as well. MacArthur is back and the concussions are a thing of the past for now. Just because he had concussions does not mean one hit to the head will cause another concussion. Personally the issue is way overblown.
