A few comments on the team of late

They have started to reduce the atrocious number of turnovers which is at least part of the reason the scoring is down against them.

AV continues to tinker with the pairings this time it was Holden starting off next to McDonagh, not sure how long that is going to last, but with a road win vs Tampa its likely things won't change for the Florida game.

Brendan Smith got the healthy scratch for the 3rd time this season. This is after he started the Habs game alongside McDonagh. Kampfer drew into the lineup as a result who ended up dropping the mitts for a wrestle with Ryan Callahan.

Kevin Hayes is so frustrating. 2 meters tall yet he does not use his frame preferring to poke check. Someone really needs to take this kid aside and teach him that he can take another step forward if he starts using his ample size. He has skills, especially with the puck on his stick and can go wide with enough speed to create chances but lord help NHL defensemen if he ever "GETS" it and drops the shoulder to take it directly to the net. We have seen glimpses of this Hayes but not with any regularity. 30 goals and 100 pims are within his reach, he only has to want it.

JT Miller still seems to want the cute play when the hard one is less prone to create a turnover. No doubt he has the skills and wheels to be a top 6 forward in the NHL. When he has the puck on his stick, amazing things can happen but when he is looking to dish especially in his defensive zone its nail biting time.

Boo Nieves is going to be a very good checking center. The question is what his ceiling is. He has shown some very nice flashes of offensive potential so far this season. He had a nifty knockdown of the puck and feed to Grabner on a goal that was called back for a high stick vs Vasilevsky. He is big, can skate well and has the defensive awareness NY needs on the bottom six. That can easily be his meal ticket, but there could be more there. I would like to see a bit more physical play, but overall he has filled an important need for NY.

Grabner is not finishing with the same aplomb as last season, then again we all kind of knew that was going to happen. As a pending free agent, Jeff Gorton should probably be looking to take the best offer by the deadline but perhaps a team comes calling sooner hoping for his goal scoring talent based on his resume. He has been a great fit for the team and they will miss his playstyle if he goes, but NY can probably be successful by inserting another player in his stead.

Jesper Fast is playing very well despite coming off surgery. He stopped a goal vs Tampa and is a very solid bottom 6 guy that can flash some offense as well. This fan hopes NY keeps him. Last season I enjoyed both Jesper and Lindberg's never say die on any play. Great along the boards, great stick work and they get back on most plays to counter any rush opportunities by the other team. NY could have used Lindberg this season, too bad management couldn't swing a deal for Vegas to take Staal... Then again that probably would have cost them one of their 1st round picks. Is missing out on Andersson or Chytil worth tossing Staal overboard and having Lindberg on the team ? tough choice to make.

Unfortunately we have the nice brother. If Jimmy had Kevin's skills he would be a terror. I do not see Kevin ever becoming Forsberg-esque in terms of mean style. Miller is excellent but doubt his pass mentality will completely die you basically have to from childhood be a shooter to translate all the way. Like I am sure Tarasenko was the trigger man as a kid as well it is all he knows. Grabner dynamic style we cannot replace has Gaborik breakaway speed but hands are not elite, nonetheless wow what a bargain and yes if someone wants to pay us nicely for him so be it restock the cupboard. Fast gotta love having you know AV was cursing up a storm when McPhee took Lindberg but hat off to him to know the type of talent Oscar is. Chytil already tearing up AHL cannot wait until he fills out more with age look forward to his arrival.

ah it is what it is I can never really say anything against Nash, I accepted his decline years ago hard to be a dominant power forward as you inch towards age 34. Honestly just enjoying what is more than likely his last season on Broadway as I think the youth movement goes full swing this year. I could honestly see Henrik dealt to a contender this season or next to accelerate the rebuild on fly. Imagine the haul we would have received had it been him not Talbot at the draft.

yes that would have been an impressive haul

I doubt anyone wants henrik's contract, but I suppose goal tending is at a premium and Lundquist keeps setting records

Nash is going to take a major pay cut to stay or will hopefully be traded at the deadline for a useful piece/pick. Then perhaps comes back to Broadway on a short term lower cap hit. NY can even eat some of his cap hit to improve the return.

It should be interesting, although I haven't written the season off yet

Not sure they would've got much for The king. Goalies don't command alot & especially ones with a hard to move big contract

NY is starting to surge and the powerplay is lights out lately. Really impressive extra man and you don't want to close your eyes when NY has the puck.

Also Grabner is hot and finding the back of the net, although 1 or 2 of his last handful were empty nets. Then again considering his cap hit, this guy is really providing a great ROI.

Rick Nash just continues to play a complete hockey game, on the back check, in front of the net and he still has giddyup in his stride. especially the first few strides when NY finds him with the slick outlet pass.

JT Miller is getting better on an almost weekly basis. Clearly he has the confidence in his game and more importantly with coach who is putting him out there on a regular basis. Miller has some very nice numbers and yet is not really getting much powerplay time so those numbers are essentially 5 on 5 stats. As mentioned before he needs to improve his defensive game especially in the NY zone in front of Henke.

Brendan Smith continues to ride the pine

Nice home win against the Oilers.

Still cannot understand what the &^$% AV is doing with Deharnais out on the PP. WTF ?

Zibanejad & Hayes & Miller should be the ones getting PP time at pivot for NY.

Zucarello missed 2 open nets in this game. He has started shooting more lately and become less pass happy, unlike Hayes who has put the puck onto open forwards sticks for easy tap ins.

grabner continues to feast on open net goals in the last minute

Marc Staal with the ugly turnover early in the game that could have been a momentum turner. Common marc, you are the veteran on the club !

Nash's hard work is finally starting to pay off

Deharnais with the healthy scratch, gee that took all of what a quarter of the season ? The best part is someone else gets his PP time

Saw a little of Vesey out there instead

What an impressive road game versus a rather "hot" Carolina team.

Without the captain either who will not play until AFTER the weekend.

Lundqvist was really solid and made some outstanding saves.

However it masks some terrible turnovers, especially in the early part of the game. Zibanejad with an exceptionally horrible one.

Lundqvist was able to make the big saves when the game was still on the line.

Happy for Fast to get put up some nice numbers after the game got ugly. His first 2 goal game.

Happy Thanksgiving to those in the US

Such a terrible game for NY & kudos to Vancouver for taking advantage of the numerous NY turnovers.

It was a parade of odd man rushes which Henrik mostly thwarted.

The team pretty much played an uninspiring game until the 3rd period when Grabner scored his league leading 8th 3rd period goal to tie it up.

Very impressed with the Canucks game plan. It will be interesting how the team deals with the eventual retirement of the Sedins but overall they look very solid.

A great setup by Nash to Vesey to tie up the game setting up OT and eventually the shootout which Vesey who seems to be finding his game ended nicely.

Boo sat with a hip pointer with the otherwise invisible Deharnais dressed for the game.
