we probably need a sticky on Markstrom since a thread on him crops up every 2-3 days

the best way to look at this kid is to recognize that he's being groomed as the heir to the goaltending throne in FL. So they don't want to rush him but they definitely want to see what he can do and if he's NHL ready...I'd say a cautious estimate is that he starts 10 games, Salak probably starts double that and Vokoun gets the lion's share

Salak got Loaned out to a Swedish team, so I dunno if he will get to play this year for the Panthers..

That having been said. Markstrom playing in the NHL this year will depend on one of a few things IMO.

1. Vokoun getting injured
2. Clemmensen getting injured
3. His adjustment in the AHL to NA style hockey.
4. Vokoun getting traded at or before the deadline

If number 3 goes well then he will likely get a call up near the end of the year.. If one of the others happen then I would believe that Markstrom is the first goalie call up

I would put zero stock in Markstrom producing anything this season of fantasy value - then you can't be disappointed. I really can't imagine him seeing more than 4 or 5 starts.

I know he probably won't play that much or at all this year in FLA unless something else happens (injury, trade, etc....), but he had a real nice debut tonight as he played the second 1/2 of the game against CAR and shut them out despite being out shot 13-2 in the 3rd.

Anyways, just an update for all the patient Markstrom owners.

He seemed okay on the 17saves in the preseason game split. 0 goals allowed. Good sign for things to come. But, yea better chance in 2011, earliest. Unless injuries occur.

Not at least until the trade deadline, but probably only next season.

I have him in one of my leagues, and I am quite happy to wait for him to adjust in the AHL this year. Ideally he would play his guts out down there, Vokoun would be traded this year, and he'll rise to the throne starting next campaign.
