Default Parise's Worth in a Keeper

I have to decide on a contract for Zach Parise for my signature team. I can keep him for one more year at $22, but if I give him a long term contract, he immediately increases by $5 and also increases by $5 each year. I can give a maximum 4 year contract meaning he would be $42 in his final year (2013-2014.)

Is Parise worth almost 20% of my team's salary cap?

One thing I should mention is that most of the big name contracts are ending after this season (Ovechkin, Crosby, Malkin, Luongo etc...) and will be available for auction next season.

    Thanks for any help!

Too many ifs, ands or buts to consider here.

How many people will have tons of cap space available next year?
What are the cap hits for other players like?

You have almost $200 already tied up. With such a limited # of players there has to be some real bargains out there at some pt.

I would be more likely to sign him for 1 year and then see what happens, or maybe even 2 years.

Can you cut guys? Savard at $21 seems expensive in your format. Downie for $1 is awesome!
8 Team Auction league: 4C, 4LW, 4RW, 6D, 2G, 5 bench, 5 farm. $1,000,000 salary cap, live auction annually, 3 year contracts, RFA after contract expiry. Player goes back into the draft, manager who keeps an RFA has the opportunity to match the highest bid. Keep 15 total PLUS farm team. Farm team counts towards your cap.

You can cut guys but you're on the hook for half of their salary. To cut Savard would mean eating $14 worth of cap space so I'll be keeping him.

Here are some of the players auctioned off last season:

    Thornton - $65
    Spezza - $49
    St. Louis - $48
    Gaborik - $40
    Alfredsson - $35

Their are definitely some bargains each year...but the big names are usually going for pretty big dollars. Looking at the salaries above makes Parise at $42 look like a bargain.

Based on this list, Parise is well worth the money you would be tying up, even into year 4 at $42.

Look at it this way: how much do you think he would fetch if he was auctioned? One would think more than Gabbie & Spezza, but less than Thornton.

Considering that you'll be losing Malkin next year (or you'll have to pay huge for him) I'd suggest signing Parise long term.

    WOW!

In my league, 14 teams with a 225 cap at the draft,

    Thornton got 39
    Parise 35
    St-Louis 42
    Alfredsson 28

    ...

But if I were you, I would give him two years...always keep enough money to get a good player at a cheap price. If you are patient and keep some money, at some point, you'll get whoever you want at a decent price because nobody can afford him...
