    Default One-year league goalie rankings

    Hi all,

Was wondering what everyone's consensus goalie rankings are for this season in a 1-year league. never before have we seen so many starting goalie changes as we did last year causing the value of goaltending to decrease compared to the last few years.

one of my annual 1-year leagues drafted earlier than usual due to complicated availabilities to draft but here is the order that the goalies were taken. 8-man man league with standard roto categories.

*note: vancouver based league, keep that in mind

rank. name team - team in league that drafted goalie based on draft position
    1. roberto luongo VAN - team 5
    2. martin brodeur NJ - team 4
    3. ryan miller BUF - team 1
    4. marc-andre fleury PIT - team 3
    5. tuukka rask BOS - team 7
    6. antero niittymaki SJ - team 8
    7. ilya bryzgalov PHX - team 6
    8. semyon varlamov WSH - team 2
    9. jimmy howard DET - team 6
    10. henrik lundqvist NYR - team 7
    11. pekka rinne NSH - team 4
    12. craig anderson COL - team 2
    13. miikka kiprusoff CGY - team 1
    14. jaroslav halak STL - team 8
    15. jonathan quick LA - team 5
    16. jonas hiller ANA - team 4
    17. antti niemi CHI - team 3
    18. cam ward CAR - team 5
    19. michael leighton PHI - team 7
    20. tomas vokoun FLA - team 8
    21. steve mason CBJ - team 8
    22. brian elliott OTT - team 3
    23. carey price MTL - team 4
    24. niklas backstrom MIN - team 1
    25. chris mason ATL - team 2
    26. jonathan bernier LA - team 6

thoughts? obviously for goalies there is immense room for personal bias. niittymaki early was obviously a bit of a reach considering other more stable goalies. other than that, it doesnt look too too out of line based on the notion of 'what have u done for me lately?' combined with 'are you starting?'

team 1 - ryan miller, miikka kiprusoff, niklas backstrom
team 2 - semyon varlamov, craig anderson, chris mason
team 3 - marc-andre fleury, antti niemi, brian elliott
team 4 - martin brodeur, pekka rinne, jonas hiller, carey price
team 5 - roberto luongo, jonathan quick, cam ward
team 6 - ilya bryzgalov, jimmy howard, jonathan bernier
team 7 - tuukka rask, henrik lundqvist, michael leighton
team 8 - antero niittymaki, jaroslav halak, tomas vokoun, steve mason

Very surprised to see Niemi go 17th.
I understand he isn't signed yet and Chicago may lose Seabrook or Campbell along with all the other players who were let go due to cap reasons but 17th is shocking.

Nittymaki is taken way too high... I like Greiss as a darkhorse to split time by Dec.

First off, I don't think I would be disappointed with any of these groups of goalies.

    1. roberto luongo VAN - You expect this is a Vancouver based league, not too bad either with an improved Vancouver D.
    2. martin brodeur NJ - He is still the king of fantasy goalies until he retires.
    3. ryan miller BUF - Vezina, enough said.
    4. marc-andre fleury PIT - A little high for my liking, but he plays for a powerhouse team so wins are plenty.
    5. tuukka rask BOS - Arguably the best young goalie right now.
    6. antero niittymaki SJ - This is too high here. Yes he is in a good situation but before Bryz and Lundqvist, not to mention several others?
    7. ilya bryzgalov PHX - Bryz at seven is a good deal, in my opinion.
    8. semyon varlamov WSH - A little high here with Neuvirth lurking.
    9. jimmy howard DET - Would've taken Lundqvist.
    10. henrik lundqvist NYR - Steal.
    11. pekka rinne NSH - Good pick here.
    12. craig anderson COL - Can he repeat last year's performance.
    13. miikka kiprusoff CGY - Can't believe Kipper falls to 13, how times have changed.
    14. jaroslav halak STL - Not too surprising here.
    15. jonathan quick LA - I like Quick but I'm afraid he showed he can't be a workhorse and Bernier is ready.
    16. jonas hiller ANA - Decent goalie but better options available at this time.
    17. antti niemi CHI - Could be a steal when Chicago figures out how to fit him under the cap.
    18. cam ward CAR - Former MVP could make this manager look genius.
    19. michael leighton PHI - 5-hole goals all season.
    20. tomas vokoun FLA - Great pick.
    21. steve mason CBJ - Seeing as he was probably going in the top 10 last year, this could be quite a pick.
    22. brian elliott OTT - Still not sold on him, but not much left.
    23. carey price MTL - Personally, I don't like him (he's burned me too many times in too many leagues).
    24. niklas backstrom MIN - Very good pick. Very consistent goalie.
    25. chris mason ATL - Not much left at this point.
    26. jonathan bernier LA - Funny that a back-up gets picked before some starters.

Overall, I'd say this went pretty much as expected. I'm sure Niemi not being signed scared some teams from him. That and Niittymaki going so high are the only real surprises here.

obviously since its a shallower league everyone has a solid set of goalies. however, that also means competition to dominate gaa & sv% is paramount to winning the league as you simply cant giveaway points in a roto league.

it appears everyone is in agreement that niitymaki was high. lundqvist was a good deal where he was picked, however, i can definitely see 8 teams strong than new york in an already mediocre eastern conference. everyone in the league was unsure how niemi's arbitration will go. for all we know, niemi may want too much money and huet could possibly be the starter again lol

also, vancouver league meant minnesota/edmonton/calgary players are valued less lol. (which was the case)

No one wanted to give Lehtonen or Ellis a shot...

My H2H league is a bit deeper, so I agree with an earlier post - that al of these groupings are very nice, but I'm thinking:

Lehtonen (if healthy...muah hahahahha)...seriously... if that SOB becomes a mainstay on the ice... he'll blow us all away with his stats by year's end... risky, yes...but I think I select over C. Mason... even Price (not signed yet... might have Theo or Turco for back-up, and we know Carey is a head-case).

Ellis (I heard someone say - "this years' Anderson..."). My dark horse selection.

Watch that Neuvirth isn't the #1 in WSH by Thanksgiving...USA Thanksgiving...

That Huet talk is for real too! Can't see CHI moving Campbell... Niemi's head growth (I stand corrected - his agent's "cha-ching" sensor growth) might cost him and US!!! CHI has it going on... but I don't understand how they can have Hossa and Campbell play second line with those contracts!! Must be nice!

G,A,+/-, PIM, PPG, SHG, GWG, OTG, FOWs, Hits, Blks, Maj, Mis, (bonus scoring for D-men makes them comparable to Wing)
    Wins, Saves, GA, Shutouts

    C: Zibanejad, Thomas, Tavares
W: Stutzle, Robertson, Connor, Buchnevich, McCann

I am not particularly struck on Team 2's goalies but it might work well.

Lehtonen, Smith and Leclaire could really surprise this year.

I really think that team 4 and 7 are set up for great years, although team 8 could definitely surprise

in this league the managers for team 4 and team 7 traditionally value goaltending more than most. (im team 4) having your goalies crap the bed is beyond frustrating so im optimistic my crew can carry me through this season. i may, however, trade hiller and pick up another goalie with some question marks since i think i can take a 'go for broke' gamble. dan ellis is definitely a player im lookin at at the moment
