Eklund rumour. Dismiss.
Apparently there is some discussion between Wilson and the Kovalchuk camp. If that is true something big has to be brewing.
Thornton now 31, has one year left at $7.2m left on his contract. There has been some question and criticism that Thornton can't deliver in the playoffs. Resigning Thornton next year is a big question mark for San Jose. If San Jose did not win the Stanley Cup this year all fingers would be pointed at Thornton and his inability to deliver the cup. Tensions and public doubt about resigning Thornton to a long term contract would be rampant. San Jose could just lose him for nothing as a UFA next year amid all the fan discontent. Perhaps Kocalchuk is the longer term answer for San Jose. Right now Wilson does not have enough cap space for Kovalchuk but if he moved Thornton he could make it work.
Burke could trade Kaberle $4.25 with picks, prospects or what ever it takes to get Thornton. If the plan is for Wilson to sign Kovalchuk he could not take any players from Toronto other than Kaberle as it would not leave him with the cap space needed to sign Kovalchuk. This deal would free up $3m in cap space for San Jose, giving them about $9.m to work with. This is enough to get serious about Kovalchuk. San Jose could move Marleau back to center to replace Thornton. San Jose has 18 players under contract if they shipped Thornton to Toronto for Kaberle + and signed Kovalchuck to $8m per they would have $1.35 for an additional player to fill out the roster.
That would give them a top six of Kovalchuk, Marleau, Heatley with Clowe, Pavelski and Setoguci and a solid D with Kaberle replacing Blake. While Kaberle may only stay for the one year it would give a chance Demers to develop. Demers would be better prepared to carry the load in another year. The only fly in the ointment that I can see is that Setoguci is an unsigned RFA looking for an increase on the $1.2m he made last year. Not sure how that is gets solved. Oh well it sounded great for awhile. Maybe it is Schenn instead of Kaberle as his cap hit would be even less than Kaberle's.
One of the major complaint about teams dealing for Kaberle is his 1 yr contract. So ideally leafs need to find a dance partner for whom that is not as big of an issue or a team that has another bigger agenda were Kaberle can be a piece of the puzzle.
San Jose might just be that partner.
Lol, I was definetly wondering how much Burke needed to add to turn a Kaberle into a Thornton.
LOL why are the Leafs involved in any rumour where something big is about to happen?

Where are you seeing this info at? I have not seen anything relating to San Jose?
KBooks' threads are directly tied to everything LEAFS.
It's an Eklund rumour e3 hahaha
You seriously need to stop making these rumours or at least put [Rumour] or[Speculation] in the title of the thread
How about put [Ecklund] or name the title, "a good laugh"?
Link? You're starting to sound like Eklund and everything has something to do with the Leafs.
Well don't you know the leafs are the center of the hockey universe.LOL why are the Leafs involved in any rumour where something big is about to happen?
The ? in the title was suppose to indicate this was not fact just a thought.
Sorry if my musings are offending but wow it sure got a lot of responses fast.
What else is there to talk about anyway?

I hate reading speculation about the Leafs because it basically means it's not gonna happen. Everything Burke does seems to come out of nowhere aha.
"* All this comes into play as a third team has entered the Kovalchuk Sweeps (or as one source has termed it as of today, "The Clusterchuk Sweeps"...The San Jose Sharks. They would have to move Thornton to make this happen...likely to a team out East who could afford him for one year and would benefit from his scoring and one year deal...
* Speaking of the Toronto Maple Leafs...I am hearing mixed reports regarding Kaberle..some saying Setoguchi, the other...Ryan Clowe. Pavelski is definitely not being moved right now. That is all that appears certain."
There is the Eklund rumor.
e 1-5 is his "rating" scale. 5 being done deal.

I think it has something to do with the number of coins he had to flip to arrive at the conclusion.
I figure it's something like heads = true, tails = false
So this would would have went:
First he'd draw Toronto and San Jose out of a hat
Setoguchi?: Tails
Boyle?: Tails
Thornton?: Heads
Kadri?: Tails
Kaberle?: Heads

This is interesting nonetheless. Would SanJose rather have Kovalchuk then Thornton? Well if that is the case, then Thornton will be traded and Kovalchuk will be signed.. These kind of things never happen though, this would be to huge.
It might be smart for SanJose to try this out though, what do they really have to lose? They have choked every year to date, so can they lose anything for trying?
Zorro says "vote for Dobber"
Angus is my best friend at dobberhockey..
Of course...Kovalchuk's playoff success would be a great asset to the rest of the San Jose cast.
