Most names I am pretty OK with. Some have some lose geographic affiliation with their home city, many do not.

The only ones I really cannot stand are those that move cities and kept their rather specifically geographic team names... the NBA is the worst offender with the (Minneapolis) Los Angeles Lakers, (New Orleans) Utah Jazz and (Vancouver) Memphis Grizzlies.

in the NHL looking at you (Atlanta) Calgary Flames.

I wouldn't call "Flames" geographically specific at all.

I know people who thought Lakers was a nickname for people from LA, as in New Yorkers or Canadians, and they added the K because LA-ers sounded bad.

On another naming note, the Washington Redskins are using Washington Football Team this season.

Thank you Dennis! I know I could have looked it up, but I was hoping that I could get the relationship between the name and the city along with the meaning.

Well... There isn't one. The Kraken was said to roam the waters around Greenland in another age and is in no way associated with the Pacific coast. Someone mentioned earlier about the Raptors capitalizing on the popularity of Jurassic Park when they formed and that's probably the best comparison. The Kraken has entered pop-culture, I assume it mostly started with the older Clash of the Titans movie (also why people think it's from Greek mythology) and as mentioned, it's been used recently as a brand of (pretty good) rum, was in the Pirates of the Caribbean movies, and was a family's sigil in Game of Thrones.

Also the Canadiens have long celebrated their shitty team with the toilet seat emblazoned on the chest of their sweaters.
