Kopitar is worth a third. Centers are plentiful this year, surprised no one on the wire that would help you.
Given my roster, is Kopitar worth giving up a 2019 draft pick for? I'm a bit thin at centre, and he's got 1 year remaining on his contract after this year, so I'll have to shed a contract after the year to stay at 4, because if I acquire him and don't move a contract in the off-season, I won't be able to sign Benn, who I got in a trade this year/expires this year. I'm able to top him up, but only if I have a 4th contract slot open. I'll probably try to re-sell Kopitar, or maybe Patches, whoever would garner the best return, and keep the other. Benn, Hall and Wheeler are for sure keeps, the 4th spot is flexible. I could still trade Hall at some point before next year, since he's my 2 year, but not in a rush to do so, more just exploring his value (as per other threads).
The team trading him is re-building, and just picked up Monahan, and already has Forsberg, Huberdeau and Drouin, so he would have to shed a contract too, or go into next year with 5 keepers, and forfeit a 1st, but he's rebuilding so that makes no sense.
The other gm said to offer what is fair, so I told him maybe a 3 in 2019.
For reference, 3rd round this past draft: Dadonov, Jones, Lee, Rinne, Big Buff, Schultz, E Staal, Perry (barf), OEL, Vasilevskiy, Miller, Lundqvist, Horvat, Burakovsky.
Obviously not tantalizing talent or anything, but it's still a good piece for him. I would consider moving up to a 2nd, but don't want to start too high.

I would do the deal for a 3rd and when his contract expires, you might even consider keeping him depending on who your other keepers are at that time.

His contract doesn't expire until after next season, my decision would have to come this off-season. I've got Wheeler, Patches and Hall under contract beyond this season, and Benn I acquired in early Dec and he's a 1, so to top him up, I need to make sure I stay at 3 contracts (not counting him), so that he'll be my 4th. That's why I said I'll have to shed a contract to sign Benn, because with Kopitar, that adds another contract. You can't get a 2 yr guy for instance, wait for contract to expire, then sign him again, not how our league works. You can leave a guy's contract the same, or top them up, but once it's up it's up. If a keeper you signed has been off of your team for at least a calendar year, then you can sign them to whatever slot is open.
Just as an example, I traded my 3 yr (Kuzy) this year, so if I re-acquire him before 1 year has elapsed, I just can't sign him to a new contract after the year, his contract defaults to what it would have been if I never traded him originally. So if before Dec of this year I get Kuzy again, he would be my 2 year, but obviously I could only keep him if I have room contracts wise. If a year has elapsed, I can sign him to whatever I want after the year, as long as I have room. Make sense? I'm not planning to re-acquire him, but just saying how it works.
