Default Thatcher Demko career potential + timeline for call up.

    Hello All,

What do you think Thatcher Demko will become as an NHL goalie?

When do you think he will get called up and start having fantasy value?

    Thanks!

I'm curious as well. I can't imagine it will be very long because I don't really think Markstrom or Nillsen are the answers in goal for the Canucks. Markstrom will amount to a bottom tier NHL starter or a solid backup, Nillsen will be a decent backup option for a team.

Personally I see him as the top goalie prospect in the NHL. He has legit skills and (almost more importantly) a clear line to the starting job for Vancouver, perhaps as early as next season.

They could give him another season in the AHL or they could use him as their backup next season. In 2019-2020, he probably starts taking over the crease, and hopefully the Canucks are a little better team by then.

Whether he gets called up this year - barring injury to Nilsson or Markstrom (surprised Markstrom isn't injured yet tbh) will entirely (imo) depend on where the Utica Comets sit in the playoff race. Currently they are 9th. If he can play meaningful hockey in Utica all season, he's not getting called up. If they either - get eliminated from the playoffs with time in the NHL schedule. or secure a spot prior to the end of the season, I can see him getting real call up and a couple of games at most. If there's an injury, I can see a platoon until said injured goalie returns.

Both Nilsson & Markstrom are under contract next year. It would appear it's Managements desire to have Demko spend next season in the AHL as well. That said, if he improves on his current high performing level to start next year I doubt they would hold the future back any longer. If ownership was willing to upset the Luongo boat with Schneider and then taco loving Lack... there will be nothing stopping them from waiving Nilsson and setting Markstom into a platoon as early as next season.

Which is what I expect. Him to become 'back up' to Markstrom by November/December of next year and have the net by February. They'll cut ties with Nilsson over Markstrom based on salary. This ownership is cheap. (3.66 - 2.5 mil/yr).

Follow the Comets and IR reports. Those two things will determine Demko's playing time in the NHL this season.

A starter (assuming he pans out in the NHL) I would be on the 2019-2020 season. Maybe a few games next season.

Fantasy relevant.... Likely whenever the Canucks get good, so who knows (2025? haha)
