Is it possible to grade just on talent without cup wins in consideration?

I think a real good debate could be made out of who’s better between no. 18, 19... Bourque or Lidstrom

I think so. He is arguably one of the most prolific goal scorers of all time. Sure, he's the only guy on this list without a Cup but I have no issues with him being on this list.

I do agree that Bossy or Potvin should have made that list but it's damn hard to finalize these things. I am not sure I'd have Trottier there.

Yeah, Bossy is the only one of those three that I would consider for top 25. Potvin was fantastic and Trottier was one of my favourite players growing up, he was just so good it was sublime.

2. Gordie Howe
3. Mario Lemieux
4. Bobby Orr

Players generally are bigger, faster, stronger now a days so it's hard to compare between eras but that is how I have my list. But then again it's strictly opinion based so it doesn't mean it's right. I know of some people who think Guy Lafleur is the greatest player of all time, all while having Gretzky out of the top 5 .... another (whos opinion I respect very highly) says Datsyuk is the 'most talented'.

While I agree with you that Ovechkin is one of the greatest goal scorers, it's hard to say he's the greatest though. I guess it's a personal opinion for you probably because you grew up in a different era then someone like myself who's a bit older.

For me Brett Hull is the greatest goal scorer of all time with both Ovechkin and Phil Esposito right there with him. I can appreciate you are too young to remember Esposito and in all fairness, I was just a young pup myself when he was in his heyday years of pumping out 60+ goals in a season. My dad was a big Leafs fan and he hated Espo because he scored so many goals against the Leafs but he would always say that Espo was one of the best goal scorers he's ever seen too.

Hull was just incredible. I know, he played in the 80s when goals came early and often, but to me he was the purest goal scorer. Man, that release was awesome.

this is supposed to be a list for the greatest hockey players? is there a single GM that would take ovy in their prime over lets say lidstrom in their prime? maybe someone who wants to sell tickets, but certainly not one that wants to win. anyone can play selfish to pad their stats.

True, but you have to score if you want to win games, and OV does that better than anyone in the game today and has pretty much his entire career.
