Why has it worked? Curious as to what backs it up?

It's been a win-win.
This has nothing to do with right-wing vs left-wing.

But I agree legalizing marijuana is only strengthening the economy. 100%.

At the end of the day all governments are corrupt.

Which is why you should be reading this thread!!

This should have been done decades ago.

The only way to legalize it is to rush it. If you don't it'll never happen.

I agree though, that it will create a lot of problem. And taxpayers money will go towards dealing with these problems in the future. But the money it'll create will offset that easily.

The burgers would become worse. The cleanliness worse. Everything would be worse than the competition. Which is why I'd say, even unregulated, it's in McDonalds best interest to pay their people a competitive wage, at least as high as the competition is paying. They don't need the government to tell them what to do.
They'll hurt their own bottom line if they want to try paying their people next to nothing.
I think there's a famous story about Henry Ford recognizing this over a century ago.
Of course it would be in McDonald's best interest to pay their staff a good rate.

Their at a great advantage since it's McDonalds. People would pay for that.

Im talking about the mom and pop shops or regional stores.

"We can get a $6 burger at McDonalds or a $4 burger at 'Ronnies'. It's shittier but hey it's cheaper."

Kinda like how we shop at these dollar stores. When the item eventually breaks we don't care cause it was so cheap.

For what it's worth, the 17yr old behind the counter at mcds doesn't REALLY care if he's/she's making $15/hr vs $16/hr. They'll put in the effort they decide. They don't care about the job, it's beer money for kids. They lose it, oh well, not like there's bills that need to be paid, or anything.

Teenagers have other stuff going on that are higher on their list than their PT job. School, athletics, and even friends end up higher on the list. Saying, "we'll give you $1/hr if you work super hard" won't do much when they work 10-20hrs/week. Some may, most won't adjust their effort/commitment level to get that $1

As with most government ideas I don't expect this to be executed well.

Good discussion. Glad there's pretty general agreement that this is bad economics. Short-term gain for lower earners getting more $ and the Ontario Liberals gaining votes from them, long-term pain when a portion of these people lose their jobs entirely and the cost of living continues to skyrocket.
    From MacLean's;
"The province?s economic watchdog, the Financial Accountability Office, has estimated more than 50,000 people could lose their jobs due to the minimum wage increase.
A TD Bank report has estimated the minimum wage hike could cost the province?s economy as many as 90,000 jobs by 2020. And an analysis from the Keep Ontario Working Coalition concluded over 185,000 jobs could be impacted."

Everyone is stoned... they buy more fast food. Increases min-wage employees and profits of these businesses even in the face of increased wage costs.

legalize weed and min-wage hikes won't move the dial.

That said. a 30% hike in wages makes my 1.5, 1.75% annual increases look like shit. I need better union barganizers at the table for my next collective agreement.

Kathleen Wynne should be available to your union as of June 7 of next year.

I think it's a bad idea to raise the minimum wage to $15/hr. It will kill many small businesses and indeed cause the loss of some jobs. My millennial niece is very hawkish on this issue and has said that if you want more money, go get an education or learn a trade. She also had the benefit of having two hard working parents as role models.

Any word on that living wage experiment that was supposed to be happening in three (I think) Ontario towns? Or was I on drugs and that's not a thing?
