Calvin Pickard on waivers
This kid was supposed to become a stud and now he's on waivers because Vegas decided they want Malcolm Subban instead? I can't believe it but it's true. I can't imagine Pickard getting through waivers, and I don't understand how they weren't able to trade him. They also didn't try very hard because the move was made just a couple of days after they claimed Subban.

So whats the take on him now? He will play for the Marlie until Andersen gets injured, I presume. Is that good, bad or not worth paying attention too?

He was needed because Babcock didn't really trust the Leafs #3, Sparks. If Andersen went down, McElhinney isn't a guy who can play well for 15 games in a row. He's a designated backup. Pickard is there in case either guy in the NHL goes down, particularly the starter. It's also worth noting the Leafs tried to get a better backup - they apparently were hoping to sign Condon before he re-upped in Ottawa. There weren't many good cheapy backups so they re-signed McElhinney.
If Andersen doesn't get hurt and McElhinney plays acceptably well as the backup, Pickard probably won't see much time at all in the NHL this season. 5 games max.

Solid pick up for the Leafs. The only offseason move I was worried about was backup goaltending. Don't get me wrong, McElhinney was solid for us down the stretch last season but I'm not comfortable as him as the full-time back up. I can see Pickard playing in the AHL regularly until McElhinney has a bad game or two. Regardless of how it plays out, I expect Pickard to be the Leafs regular backup sooner rather than later.
As for him clearing waivers, it boggles my mind that no team made a claim on him, especially when you look at some of these teams backup options. The team that made the most sense for me was Boston. The Bruins record when a backup started last season was atrocious. Not to mention they just lost Subban on waivers themselves. Chalk up another bad decision by Don Sweeney. That man is going to drive that team into the ground.
