Please let us know the outcome.

Pound sand I feel is your b est stance given his request.
If the deal doesn't happen, you still have an excellent bunch of keepers.

It would be great to own McDavid especially as a fan. But at what cost.
I'm a huge Crosby fan. The owner wanted McDavid straight up in our limited keeper. Pound sand.
I'd rather pass and watch Crosby as a fan instead of making the wrong trade.

Good luck. Who blinks first ?

Here's where thing may get tricky... the owner wants to make the trade post draft. Meaning, id have to (hopefully) trade or drop Marchand/Hedman/Byuf before the draft... do the draft and end up trading my keepers after.. leaving me with just McDavid/Murray and whoever I end up drafting-- probably no one special due to my lack of draft picks.

His reasoning is because he'd like to have the absolute best team possible, and giving up McDavid is killing him. That way he gets to keep Pavelski/McDavid/Quick/Lindqvist, do the draft, then trade McDavid and have a great roster.

I'm really trying to make him do the trade pre-draft so that I can at least keep Marchand, et al. -- any way I can incentivize this to him?
If you are ok with possibly sacrificing this year to get McDavid, I'm ok with the deal but you need to get at least 2 good picks coming back (1st and 3rd maybe). That way he still has his second to grab an extra star and you have that 1st to get a player you will most likely keep and hope that your 3rd or his lands you that 4th keeper. Therefore, you may have to do a 2 part deal where he drafts the players you want with the picks and then makes the swap after the draft.

Personally, I'd probably be the other GM (aka finding a way to win asap) but if you are willing to wait a year, the strategy is a good one even if it's no fair on paper.

I agree. I'm trying hard to get some picks, and I'd told him that we must do the deal pre-draft or the talks are over.

He is now interested in taking Matt Murray instead of Ovi or Burns- I'm not too torn about this, as goalies seems to come along more often and I can draft some upside guys this year. I also have Martin Jones that I could think about keeping, and trade Ovi or Burns for high draft picks potentially.

I would do it with Murray involved as well but as always predraft.

Agreed. Goalies tend to be so volatile and Murray seems to be slightly fragile at this point anyways. If goalies aren't hard to come by, I'd prefer that actually.

He seems very opposed to doing the trade pre-draft... But is saying "is there anything we can do to get it done post-draft. I understand the ask may be bigger than before".

Is there any hope with this deal still? I feel i'm sacrificing just way too much by doing the trade post-draft.

    How can I make this do-able post-draft?

If he is not taking Burns + Crosby + Ovechkin for McDavid (predraft) then he is never going to trade you McDavid. Maybe there is a creative solution/trade that could be done but... I'm sticking with pound sand.

Keep Burns/Ovechkin/Crosby/Murray as you four guys. Trade Hedman and Marchand for picks. Then beat the McDavid GM in the league and take his money.

I would offer trade you want. Then let other GM know he has two days to accept. If not then you done and will pull trade. Ovi and Burns have to be monsters in this league.

The owner seemed very hesitant on the deal and the deal went cold . . . No McDavid for me . Was really thinking he was going to do the deal.. Seemed that doing it pre-draft was the deal-breaker for him.

I could maybe pursue the deal after the draft and ask for draft picks from him... We will cross that bridge when I get to it.

Thanks for all of your input! It was really helpful along the way.

In a post draft trade I would veto the hell out of this. He would essentially be almost guaranteed to win the season. Pre draft it would be acceptable in my eyes. Something to consider...
