Default Irresponsible numerical analysis (hurricane edition)

So I saw some idiotic comment from Ann Coulter about Houston's lesbian mayor being a more credible explanation than climate change for the hurricane.

It got me to wondering, do hurricanes have any political inclinations?

I pulled the Weather Underground list of 32 most costly US hurricanes and compared it to the party of the US president at the time.
(nothing from 2017 is on the list yet, but Harvey's definitely getting in, and Irma probably will too)
    Sources:
    https://www.wunderground.com/hurricane/damage.asp
    https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_o..._United_States

The earliest entry on that list was 1938. In the 78 years since then the president has been a Democrat for 48 years (Kennedy and FDR and Nixon make the numbers a little imprecise) vs 30 years for the Republicans.

In the 48 years for the Democrats there were 9 entries on the list.
In the 30 years for the Republicans there were 23 entries on the list.

There is no other conclusion: Hurricanes are god's punishment for electing a Republican President.

(note: the shit-shows that were 2004 and 2005 accounted for 7 of the 32 entries which makes the spread look worse, but even without them the Rs are at 16 in 28 years vs 9 in 48 for the Ds)

Ya... It's Ann Coulter. She might be one of the smartest idiots out there. To me, it's baffling how she can be so intelligent on one hand, and then she goes and says something ridiculous like that. A lot of times, I feel that she is intentionally trying to be controversial.

100% this. She was attempting to make a joke, a very bad joke.
It was her response to dozens of media members blaming the hurricane on man made climate change. Coulter deals in shock value.

If you haven't seen it and want to see Coulter take a verbal beating watch the Rob Lowe roast. Peyton Manning wins for best Ann Coulter joke.

That's not even the worse. Did you see Rush Limbaugh? All week long, he's been talking about how hurricane Irma was a Liberal hoax, and there was no chance it was going to hit Florida. Now he's evacuated the state. Meanwhile, how many of his listeners believed him and decided to stay?
