Holtby going to get Ben Bishoped, Samsonov will come over at the end of the KHL season and play in the AHL. He will be like Vasy for two years and then be ushered in to be the new goalie of the franchise. Do you pay Holtby 7+ million a seaon 30-35? Or do you give Samsonov a bridge deal at 3-4 mill age 23+? I'll take trading Holtby in 2019 for 1000 Alex.

    That's very true.

I agree with everything here - except them trading Holtby. I think they'll keep Holtby until the summer of 2020 when he's UFA, and Samsonov takes over from there. Assuming they're still a playoff team of course. 2018-2019 and 2019-2020 seasons will be split between the AHL and the NHL, and then they're just hoping he's ready just like Tampa did with Vasilevski.

Samsonov will be 21 when he signs his ELC if he does it after the season or this summer, so he must sign for 3 years. If he signs after his KHL season is over, they could burn the first year already this season. That would mean his ELC is over in the summer of 2020 when he should be taking over from Holtby, so a $4M bridge deal could be completely possible at that point. I believe players aged 20+ can burn their 1st season by just being on the roster for 1 game but I'm not sure about that.

I think you're right about the 20+ aged burning contract years but would he not have to pass through waivers since he's played professionally elsewhere this season?

People were making this claim like five years ago.

That's a good question. I'm guessing it's not the same rule with ELCs but I don't have any facts to support that. At least he's not eligible for the playoffs most likely.

The thread title here seemed appropriate, so I figured I wouldn't start a new thread...

Goaltender Ilya Samsonov will fly to Washington to sign his entry level contract, per his agent, Igor Larionov.

Samsonov has been reportedly told that he will report to the Hershey Bears of the AHL. #ALLCAPS
And Holtby is going to be the backup now when the playoffs start... Things are looking much better for Samsonov's future now.

I am not sure Holtby sitting and Grubauer is a help to Samsonov. If anything it proves Grubauers worth to Washington.

Holtby's stock dropping definitely helps Samsonov in Washington's organization.

I read somewhere that Washington is likely to do what Tampa did with Bishop...give the reins to the cheaper option.

I read some analysis that supported Grubauer and Samsonov as the two Washington Goalies and Holtby is shipped out!

That would give them the option of using the extra cap space on a significant addition or two outside the crease. And Grubauer not being an established #1 ATM gives Samsonov a clearer path to the top of the organization.

Once upon a time they traded Varlamov for a high draft pick.
